I tried; really.
There is nothing more discouraging than opening up your nano2006 file and seeing that you have absolutely nothing you want to write.
I feel strange saying, "I quit." and it's not even a week into the thing.
I'm proud to be a poet and I'm sorry I gave up so soon.

Just call me Carrie the Nano Flop.

write about not having anything to write about.

Failure is no reason to quit.

I'm just quitting the 50,000 word challenge. I do write every day, but no where near the word count that will get me there. If I could write a series of 500 word shorts and call the essays and anecdotes that accumulate, a novel, I suppose I'd succeed in about 4 months. I really don't have a story to write at this time. I do have a poem or two, though.

Writing isn't a contest or a competition even against oneself. It's an end in itself. If I look through the things you've written, from Snippetsville to sonnets and sestinas, you name it, in the time I've known you I think you're a spectacular success. If you have the novel in you, you'll write it--on your own schedule. In the meantime write some poems or whatever strikes your fancy. If you've forgotten how good (and prolific) you are, I suggest you go back and read some of your output.

I did NaNo a couple of years ago. Achieved MY OWN GOAL of writing for half an hour each day (which was difficult to do as weekends for me are messed up). (I ended up writing a great number of words and have them all still sitting safely for if I ever feel like going back to prose writing.) Put what you've written aside and let your poetry continue as it's obvious that's where your interest lies at the moment. You can always go back to the prose (keep it safe).

I think the key to NaNo is to set your own goals, if that means writing a poem each day, then sobeit. If that means simply writing then sobeit. There are a myriad of different ways the NaNo can be used, but the most important is that you use it for your own self. Do you let people tell you what restraints to put on your poetry? Don't let them do it to your prose.

Of course, there is also the option of not bothering. *smile* You write plenty of poems Carrie and shouldn't be 'forcing' your muse to work in only one direction if it wishes to be elsewhere. Maybe leaving the race early was planned by your muse. ;)

So, chill out, relax, and get those poems out! :rose:

Thankyou for the encouragement. I know I shouldn't be Dommey with my muse but it's such a sweet little sub that just screams to be forced into my pen and onto the page.

I'll keep hoping that the great poem will come and maybe in my lifetime.

It's good that you're still writing every day, that's an accomplishment in itself. I'm trying Nano this year for the second year. Last year I only made it to 17k and I believe that's because I was working a full time job at the time, had a new boyfriend so I was spending too much time with him and really got nowhere. I'm surprised I still haven't skipped a day, although I'm great at procrastinating. Perhaps I'll be joining you in the quitting thread soon. :p

I quit before it even started. Problem being I always start a story, and never finish it. I have five stories halfway done and waiting for me to finish them up, and a half dozen new ideas floating around in my head. blah. On top of all that, it's my birthday next weekend and it's my least favorite time of the year. Well, after Valentines day.

Don't fret about this, sweet. It's supposed to be a fun thing. If it isn't fun, I'm sure you have plenty of better things to do.

I did find "nano flop" funny, though:
nano- - /nan'oh/ 1. A prefix meaning 10^-9 or one billionth.

Used loosely to mean "small", e.g. nanotechnology, or (rarely), following "nanosecond", to mean a short time, e.g. "I'll be with you in a nano".

meg·a·flop (mĕg'ə-flŏp')
n.
A measure of computing speed equal to one million floating-point operations per second.
ergo, "nanoflop" is a measure of computing speed equal to one-billionth of a floating-point operation per second.

Ahem. What kind of slow and stodgy hardware are you northerners running on, anyway? ;)

and explanations like THIS one are what makes you so damned sexy!

As of yesterday afternoon, I'm a dirty NaNo-quitter. I was just too far behind even though I was writing nearly every day. I quit, but I'm still going to finish my writing project in December.

If you're offering, I'm there with soap-on-a-rope swinging low. ;)

With soap hangin' low and his towel in tow
he rolled into the steamy shower
where waited a wench, wet in the drench-
ing downpour, her lily - a soggy flower.

The wicked remained though her grin washed away
when she saw just how dirty he was.
Soot on his cheek and his chest all mud-streaked
left her scrubbing bubbles all in a buzz.

What ho, gallant sir, a shampoo and a rub?
Then come on in, be my guest
an' this mess that you're in
will be washed down the drain of my tub.

Bring me your soap and I'll lather your rope
and shave off the beard on your chin.
He blinked for a minute and soon he was in it
his muck going straight down the pipes

She grinned as she scrubbed him
all the dirt he had grubbed in
taken care of with a couple of swipes.

My dear, said the sir, you're creating a stir
right here at the end of my string.
Squeeze me much longer and my feeling is stronger
that creme rinse will result from this thing!

She laughed at his quandry and grinned wickedly
this would be just the result that I wished for
So just go with the flow and before you know
it you'll be finished and squished out the door.

:p

Well, I haven't officially quit yet, but with the work that was dumped on me just before Thanksgiving, I haven't had a chance to write anything during the holiday weekend. So unless I can crank out 16,000 words on Wednesday and Thursday (not impossible, given my tendency to logorrhea, but at least unlikely) you can add me to the pile of discarded nanoflops.

Calli is going to finish, though. I'm posting that statement here to shame her into it. ;)

Somebody broke up with me and my computer died. It was a bad month. I'm writing but gave up on Nano. Good to know I'm not alone. :rose:

I decided to quit the whole Nano thing today. Screw it. Took my 50,077 words and left. To hell with them anyway.

Sorry, Anna I was being faceticious, or however you spell that word. Smart ass is an easier spelling.

I won the Nano thing today! (and I'm very proud of myself) :nana:

And no, no more 30-30 for me for awhile, sorry. The well is not only dry, it's frozen solid - Champagne wrote out our weather in her piece "C-c-c-c-cold" yesterday.

It's time to do the damn laundry now that the novel is done.

ooooo... yay you! I've tried it twice, albeit this year was a bit of a wussy shot at it. My first attempt netted 37,000 words or so though. I ran out of drive as soon as I solved the mystery. Never think too far ahead of your story, or you run out of things to write. 2 of my short stories came from that try though, so not a complete wasted effort.

Anyway, good going. :nana: :nana: :nana: and congrats!

Thank you!

Thanks Carrie and Jenn for your kind words, but I feel that most of the congratulations should go to Tzara, who beat me up with his own marvellous word count until I couldn't take it anymore! Thank you, T. :rose: :rose: :rose: (bouquet of blue roses)

I hope you still can finish! Owe me a Coke if you don't.
