Don't you just love that word ... obtuse? The dictionary gives us this: "not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or observant; dull."

It seems that Nancy Pelosi had condemned the president for saying that Al Qaeda was involved in the insurgency in Iraq. She said that "the 9/11 Commission dismissed that notion a long time ago and I feel sad that the president is resorting to it again."

Now Ms. Pelosi made that statement on November 28th. November 28th would be 18 days after November 10th. That's two and one-half weeks. Eighteen days is enough time for even the obtuse Ms. Pelosi to absorb the fact that on that date Al Qaeda released an audio message claiming that they had 12,000 fighters working in Iraq. Al Qaeda brags of the number of fighters it has mobilized to battle American troops in Iraq, and Ms. Pelosi says she is sad that the president is saying that Al Qaeda has fighters in Iraq.

We should all feel sad that this woman is going to be the new Speaker of the House.

I know many people do not like the President and his party right now but the alternative keeps looking less and less attractive.

Of course Al Qaeda is part the insurgency in Iraq. They've been there since we deposed the guy who was keeping them out.

Now, if she is referring to Al Qaeda not being in Iraq before, she's right. We gave Al Qaeda a new playground.

here is one account from newsbusters.

The relevant portion of the story from David Gregory, who filed from Riga, Latvia, on the November 28 NBC Nightly News:

David Gregory: “Iraq's worsening civil war will dominate the President's meeting with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Concluding his visit to Estonia earlier today, Mr. Bush blamed the violence not on civil war but on Sunni terrorists.”

President Bush at a press conference in Estonia: “There's a lot of sectarian violence taking place, fomented in my opinion because of these attacks by al Qaeda, causing people to seek reprisal. And we will work with the Maliki government to defeat these elements.”

Gregory: “Back in Washington, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi disagreed, warning that such rhetoric about al Qaeda will make it harder for Democrats to work with the White House.”

Incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi: “The 9/11 Commission dismissed that notion a long time ago and I feel sad that the President is resorting to it again.”

FNC's Special Report with Brit Hume, but anchored by Jim Angle, led its panel segment with Pelosi's exchange with the reporter, identified on-screen as Thomas Ferraro: “President Bush today blamed the surge of violence in Iraq on al-Qaeda and denied the country is in the midst of a civil war.”

Her comment isn't clear. But hey it's given 100s of right wing bloggers material for rants, so all isn't lost. Bush isn't clear, but the accuracy of attributing recent Iraq violence to 'attacks by al qaeda' sounds dubious (and probably the intent is to bolster the phoney link he's claimed for some time.).
