Most of the comment on Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan has been within the context of Foreign and Military policy, but it may have more immediate consequences for both her and Emperor Xi in domestic issues.
Less than a week go, Joe Biden was able to bask in a significant wave of good will when al Zawahiri was killed. The Public liked it - a lot. But the President burned that goodwill with his weak support of Pelosi. "The military don't like it," said he, clearly referring to the ineffectual Lloyd Austin and his geriatrics club, better known as the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pelosi on the other hand developed very strong support for her completely consistent attitude to China. The Public liked her clear toughness.
Despite the fact that Emperor Xi and his minions are jumping up and down threatening Lord knows what, Xi too will be able to use it: the military 'Hawks' in the CCP are one of the best organized groups attending the Party Congress in November and he needs their votes for a third term. So let them out to play, fire a few missiles lads - make sure you don't hit anything. Especially, don't give the Americans any excuses to pile weapons into Taiwan, as they did into Ukraine.
In a way both Xi and Pelosi are playing November election politics and presenting themselves as leaders of their nations ambitions. For the moment President Biden has dropped the ball; he owes Pelosi big time for her work in Congress, but given the opportunity to support her he wimped it. Nancy won't forget that, and noting her position of dominance in the party, Biden may come to regret his lack of support for the lady.
Speculative thinking I admit, but sometimes it helps to look at an issue from a different angle.
