It helps, certainly. Knowing what it's like to experience sex with both sexes, I think, is an advantage all around. I only have one gay male story at the moment, but I have written a few stories from a woman's point of view. Granted, I exaggerate quite a bit, and my female characters have a tendency to, as one commenter put it, 'act the way men would want them to act,' but I do that on purpose.
