"My wife made me canvas for Obama; here's what I learned"

This got me:

I watched a campaign organizer match up a young black man who looked to be college age with a white guy about my age to canvas together. It should not have been a big thing, but the beauty of the image did not escape me.

What a wonderful article.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice article. One more step toward a 'usual suspects' av for you. ;)

Must be a lot farther East. There wouldn't be anything abnormal about that out here.

Years ago, back in the London of the Swinging Sixties, I canvassed for a political party. It doesn't matter which party because our experiences were the same. At the end of the evening the canvassers from both parties used to met in a local hostelry and swap horror stories about some of the people they'd met.

What we all found was that people who were prepared to talk to us wanted change and improvement. How? They didn't care. They wanted someone to do something about making daily life better.

Today? People in the UK are far more cynical about politicians' promises before an election. They have become used to disappointment and disillusioned about both major parties. They know that whichever party is in power the fat cats will get fatter and the ordinary working person will be worse off.

Some still hope for change. Few expect it.

But I did, of course, what most middle-aged married men do: what I was told.

Says everything that I need to know about him.

What? That he has a sense of humor? That he loves his wife? That he's a good person? The horror!

Why would anybody be surprised that people living in a housing project were mostly going to vote for a liberal such as Barack Obama?

Fabulous story.

A definite indication of the level of hope that this election has brought to the populace.

No, that he let her decide his politics for him. I love my wife, but she doesn't pick my Presidential candidates for me.

Canvassing is not the same as picking. Nobody mentioned picking. If his wife had picked for him he wouldn't self-identify as a swing voter.

White people dont attract any attention in the projects. Cops and social workers and dopers from the burbs are always there.

Seriously, the place to fear is a white trash trailer park. Anyone with teeth or shoes is outta place there.
