My thoughts on soup.

I love soup.

I do not, however, love Progresso's Vegetable Beef (With Steak!) soup. I tried some tonight, thinking I could get a quick and easy soup fix, but it was not to be. As I was opening the can, my cats did the usual twisty ankle whiny meow dance. I spooned a bit of soup into their bowl and they turned their cute little noses up at it! They refused to eat it! I knew then, that there was gonna be trouble.

I tasted it, still cold. It was kind of icky, but I thought it might improve once heated. I did the whole heat while stirring thing and took another taste. I couldn't eat it. I tried a bit of the "steak" and it was just stringy and bad. The veggies were flaccid and gross. I know I shouldn't expect too much from a canned soup, but I enjoy their Chicken and Wild Rice, so I thought this one might be okay too.

Overall appraisal:
It's bland, overly thickened, and it smells (and looks) rather like dogfood. Avoid it if you possibly can. I give it two thumbs down. Definitely.

I ended up throwing some fresh garlic, onions, celery, red pepper flakes and chicken breasts into my big pot, and it's boiling away right now. I prefer Jewish Gramma chicken soup to veggie beef any day of the week. I wish I had some matzoh meal-- I'd make some matzoh balls for it if I did. That would be so yummy!

I think I shall use alphabet noodles instead. If there's a message from God in the bowl, I'll be sure to let you know.

Tomato soup is God warmed up...

... with a lot of tomatos added, apparently.

I am a big fan of Campbells Chunky soup. I like the creamy kind the most. Of course watching Donovan McNabb throw up during a football game kind of makes you wonder if you should eat the stuff. :)

When I make Campbell's tomato soup from a can, I add crushed garlic (fresh only) and freshly ground black pepper. It tastes so fucking gourmet. It's heavenly. You should try it next time. You'll impress yourself with your culinary virtuosity.

Soup is great. Sometimes I like to go to restaurants just to get soup.

Oh, and I really really like Lo's location. :D

One more reason (as if I needed another) to not watch football....

Vastly overrated.

The main indgrediant is the most mundane known to man (water) and the taste becomes redundant. It is an appetizer only and hardly worthy of supplanting a nice salad in a 5 course meal.

Even in it's most utilized role, as a comforting broth when someone is sick, soup is not the best tool. It doesn't taste all that good and it's not very nutritious. It's mostly flavored hot water.

Tylenol and sleep would be of greater benefit to the ailing.

Iron chef I am not, but I can make a mean Tomato soup and cheese grill.

Progresso's Minestrone has been my favorite since I was little..... yum. And I would never trust meat in a can..... well..... except maybe for spaghettios. Chef Boyardee wouldn't hurt us, would he?

Blasphemer!

With the switch to working nights I've been living off canned soup, and I've come to a conclusion:

It's all fucking nasty, disgusting, boring, fake food.

Except Campbell's Cream of Tomato when made with milk and served with a grilled cheese sammich, of course. Then it's truly ambrosia.

I have a potato soup recipe that is just WONDERFUL, but you have to eat it all the first time around. When you try to reheat it, it resembles mashed potatoes more than soup.

Fish chowder is a favorite too.

A question: at what point does a soup become a stew? The line seems rather fine at times.

Agreed, with both.

Soup shops have ok soup, coffee houses have ok soup, but I prefer to make them from scratch.

MMMMMMM, Beef & Barley with carrots, parsnips, taters, and such.
Asparagus soup, hard to beat that for cream type soups...

If I wasn't so full now, I'd fix a helping right about now.

I'm a big fan of French onion, smothered in so much gooey cheese that it takes me an hour to reach the broth! Of course the problem with onions is the same as garlic - both people have to have it for the "side-effects" to be neutralized.

And this is why I only make soup from scratch these days. None of that canned shite for me.

My dad makes mean homemade beef barley joint, and also a wicked bean-type thing. I dig 'em.

I agree that soup from scratch is the very best.

I just had the first mug-ful of mine, and it's delicious. The broth is nice and savory, just like I like it, and the red pepper in it makes me almost cry but not quite. Perfect.

It'll be much better tomorrow, though. The garlic will intensify beautifully with an overnight sit in the fridge.

I'm happy that the Progresso turned out to be a disaster. If it hadn't, I would not have made the soup I'm eating now!

Damn it...

Now i'm hungry.

Hey do you make Campbells cream soup with milk or water?

calls for water..

i prefer milk.

And there's always that wicked good Thai lemongrass soup with coconut milk in it. Bonus!

Ooh, yummy! I love those little barleys. They are so cute, and I love the way they have that neat stripe down the middle. Good stuff!
