My ideal job - but with no pay

I've just applied for what might be my dream job. Computer Technician at Försäkringskassan, which is the part of state that handles paying you the money you get for being on sick leave, maternity leave, state financed studies, etc.

I'd be doing the type of things that I a) have education for, and b) do at home just for the heck of it. I'd get lots of work, and perhaps even the possibilty to educate myself further, to get evn better at what I'm doing than I am now.

The only drawback is... I won't get paid for it. Not per se. See, it's an intern type of job. I'd work as much as a regular employee, but I'd still only get about 3.000:- SKR/month - which is less than what I pay in rent for my apartment, and I've got a CHEAP apartment! The rest of my life support would be social security. Then, after 6 months, I MIGHT get hired for real - IF Försäkringskassan can afford it.

I've just applied to do my ideal job for free. Keep your fingers crossed that I get it.

Sweden - it's FANTASTIC..!

I don't know about your country, but here that sort of job usually leads to a proper paid job sooner than they say - if you are any good at it.

Go for it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I should get a reply by week 22.

I asked about the possibilities to get a steady job after 6 months, and they said that they'd hire people if they had enough money to do it.
M, on the other hand, said: "They really NEED a computer technician, so if you get one foot in, and make yourself un-spareable, they WILL hire you - and then you can advance!"

Methinks it says alot if the institutuin responsible for social security can't even pay minimal wages to their own employees. As a matter of fact, if you get the job the guv'ment pays your intern pay, the the guv'ment pays you social sec from another bag. The same amount of money to you (if we assume you get minimum pay), but double the paperwork for the buerocrats. Alas, a waste of money to not give you a normal test emploument for 6 months. Dumb.

Still, go for it. Getting a foot in in government jobs is a good thing. It should be a good and safe job if you finally get securely onto the payroll.

ps. check with the union (TCO or Kommunal should be it) and see what the deal is with these kind of things. I think they are obliged to give you the job full time full pay after six months, uless you fuck up completely.

Thanks, Liar. I'll have a look at it - if I get the job, that is. There were atleast 2 rivals for the job. Atleast I have one advantage over one of them - I have a normal voice that doesn't sound like I have something stuck in my zipper.

Go for it. If you've survived this long looking for a job, you might as well invest some time in doing something you enjoy, that might lead to a salaried position. Get something solid on your resume, connect with people in the field, and suddenly you're not just one of the many qualified people looking for work.

Svenskamou, I so hope you get the job. I think everyone above (except for Min ;) ) has told you the right stuff. Even if they didn't hire you after the internship (which would be so stupid of them), you'll have more real experience at what you do and a better CV. I'll cross my eyes once every hour for you :) .

love and love, Perdita

I'll keep my fingers crossed. But I think you're doing the right thing.
It's a huge difference whether you just sit around and depend on social services or you're actually doing something. Even if you're not paid enough it's better to earn a bit of the money you get from social help and it's only good for your sanity and health when you know you're doing something that's worth something.
Just do your best and let's hope they'll get you a real job soon.
But make sure not to be 'exploited' for too long. :)

Svenskaflicka,

I hope you get what you want. That seems like a tough option to take in order to get into the field. It takes courage, and determination to step out on such shaky ground. I have a lot of respect for your decision.

Iwil keep your dreams in my thoughts with hope for your accomplishments to come sooner, and easy for you. I know you are a smart cookie with that stuff. Still it is a tuff field.

Congradulations on making the decision to better your self. Hopefully soon we will be congradulating you on getting paid for you risk taken.

Phil

Min, no matter how nice your body looks like, I miss the goose. Could you add it in the corner of your AV?

I miss it, too. I've just got the attention span of a gnat & have been having fun with the photo software. I'll find a little goose to stick in there for ya. ;)

Hey Flicka,

Good for you, lady! Sounds like you're excited and while I'm sure more pay would have you more excited, liking what you do is priceless. Good luck and best wishes.
