I’m out for the afternoon at a gallery with my niece. We have coffee. We walk and talk. Catch up. It’s nearing the end of our afternoon, an we are at my favorite little gallery. I am walking around and I notice this adorable little girl. Golden ringlets and she is dressed in a pink fairy’s costume topped off with gold glittery shoes. I am bent down looking at a glass ball of Neptune when she comes up next to me and looks at me. We are eye to eye. We’re silent. I smile at her and she smiles back. And I look into her eyes and I am hit with this weird recognition. Like an electric current. Now...I don’t know this little girl at all. I note her mother in passing a moment ago, I do not know her either. She looks more the age of a grandmother. The little girl reaches out, her little hand tugs on one of my golden curls, not unlike her own. Her mothers calls her and she runs off. Soon me and my niece are outside the gallery saying goodbye when the little girl and her mother come outside. The mother takes her daughters hand and they walk past us, when the little girl breaks away and comes to stand between me and my niece. She just stares up at me. Her little blue eyes twinkling. A soft smile slips onto her face. And then she says goodbye. My niece and the mother share a little nervous laugh, obviously bewildered by the little girls actions. My niece says wasn’t that sweet. I mutter freaky is more like it. And then she says to me, “she looked just like you.”
