My favorite Christmas Songs

I *love* 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' especially when it's sung by one of the crooners - Bing Crosby!!

Silent Night is also a good one.

at work, they have a four hour tape that they play in the shop. It's got some older christmas songs that I'd not heard of, or renditions of songs by older singers/actors, that aren't now in the mainstream. In talking with my mom, I found out that a lot of the songs on that tape were from movies done in the 40's and 50's. Anyway, I've heard that tape over and over, and I've got quite a few favorites that I've memorized, and find myself humming frequently.

Like Judy Garland singing "Snow." I need to find the lyrics for that, sometime...

O Holy Nihgt

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a news and glorious morn,

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices.

O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night, O night divine.

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend.

He knows our need, He guardeth us from danger;

Behold your King, before Him lowly bend!
Behold you King, before Him lowly bend!

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices.

O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night divine, O night, O night divine.

same here.. thank you for posting this.

so everyone else I know hates this song...i look forward to catching it once a year on the car radio

back from 1981

Christmas Wrapping - Waitresses

"Bah, humbug!" No, that's too strong
'Cause it is my favorite holiday
But all this year's been a busy blur
Don't think I have the energy

To add to my already mad rush
Just 'cause it's 'tis the season.
The perfect gift for me would be
Completions and connections left from

Last year, ski shop,
Encounter, most interesting.
Had his number but never the time
Most of '81 passed along those lines.

So deck those halls, trim those trees
Raise up cups of Christmas cheer,
I just need to catch my breath,
Christmas by myself this year.

Calendar picture, frozen landscape,
Chilled this room for twenty-four days,
Evergreens, sparkling snow
Get this winter over with!

Flashback to springtime, saw him again,
Would've been good to go for lunch,
Couldn't agree when we were both free,
We tried, we said we'd keep in touch.

Didn't, of course, 'til summertime,
Out to the beach to his boat could I join him?
No, this time it was me,
Sunburn in the third degree.

Now the calendar's just one page
And, of course, I am excited
Tonight's the night, but I've set my mind
Not to do too much about it.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I'll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I'll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I'll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I'll miss this one this year.
Hardly dashing through the snow
Cause I bundled up too tight
Last minute have-to-do's
A few cards a few calls
'Cause it's r-s-v-p
No thanks, no party lights
It's Christmas Eve, gonna relax
Turned down all of my invites.

Last fall I had a night to myself,
Same guy called, halloween party,
Waited all night for him to show,
This time his car wouldn't go,

Forget it, it's cold, it's getting late,
Trudge on home to celebrate
In a quiet way, unwind
Doing Christmas right this time.

A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

So on with the boots, back out in the snow
To the only all-night grocery,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year!

"I'm spending this one alone," he said.
"Need a break; this year's been crazy."
I said, "Me too, but why are you?
You mean you forgot cranberries too?"

Then suddenly we laughed and laughed
Caught on to what was happening
That Christmas magic's brought this tale
To a very happy ending! "

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Couldn't miss this one this year!
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Couldn't miss this one this year!

I love Johnny Mathis Christmas carols! Winter Wonderland is the one I remember loving from my childhood.

The ones I like the most are Silent Night, Gloria in excelsis Deo,O Holy Night, Do You Hear What I Hear, Oh Come, All Ye Faithful...all the traditional ones. New ones are usually kind of hokey, though I do like Elvis' Blue Christmas :)

There is something so about his voice.

The King...singing.......... especially Blues Christmas......

"Have yourself a merry little Christmas" sung by Rosemary Clooney at her smokey best.
Or "Silent Night" from King's College Cambs......with the intro. of the boy soprano.....now that's Christmas!

My favorites are Thistlehair the Christmas Bear by Alabama, So this is Christmas by John Lennon, and Petit Papa Noel and ok just one more Feliz Navidad

Darlene Love singing "Marshmallow World"

actually that whole Phil Spector Christmas album is pretty fucking excellent

And Frank Sinatra, singing, anything really

oooh and Elvis' "Blue Christmas" is just such a sexy little holiday thing!

At one of the Holiday parities we went to, we won Frank's boxed set as a door prize. Wow! I adore his voice.

I like the "Christmas Song," "White Christmas," "Let it Snow," "Silver Bells," Always with a crooner. I love the single instrument instrumentals. There are a plethora of guitar, harp, violin albums.

One of my greatest joys is sitting down at the piano and playing "Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman," "Silver and Gold," and all of those younger tunes and have my 7 year old son sing them with me. Just makes my heart pitter patter.

There will not be a silent night for you, if I have anything to do with it!!!

Oh really? Plans for anything in particular? :D

I've not been able to get Burl Ive's rendition from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie of 'Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas' out of my head. There's a good chance if you ring my phone, I'll be belting it out when I answer:D

I walked into work on Thursday whistling "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas", and one of the children in my class sang the words that I was whistling....it was so cute.
