My dog needs a $9,000 operation. What would you do?

I have a simple rule for pet medicine and operations:

I do not spend to the level of commitment unless I'm willing to continue spending without limit. If you break the rule, the memory of the pet will be that of the money spent, not of the love you shared.

That would never happen. I've overpaid for operations and procedures before and once I even paid a significant amount of money on an operation only to have my dog need to be put down just a very short time later for an unrelated matter. Never once did I look back and think about the money.

My only concern was if my dog was put through any unnecessary suffering or pain.

I don't think that's true anymore. I mean they sell kits for less than $100.

They have kits on Amazon for $65 here. Is that what you're talking about?

Not even close.....

I'm talking about paying a geneticist with a lab to dig through the DNA of every potential breeding partner nucleotide by nucleodtide looking for potential signs of genetic deficiencies in an effort to breed a healthier dog.

It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to breed anything on that level....so if it aint a mega millions crop/livestock operation it ain't happening. It certainly isn't happening for any pet breeder. They are left to do it oldschool style...mate a pair and see what you get.

Jesus. I'm balling my fucking eyes out now.

Isn't it beautiful? It kills me, every time.

You, and many other posters in this thread are on record as supporting abortion...

So as not to hijack this very cool thread filled with love of all living creatures, my reply is over here.

I don't want to continue to hijack this thread, but I still do feral catch, spay, and release for this reason. It cuts down on territorial squabbles, etc, and also keeps the population in control.

It's always tough. That's why I try not to judge someone for their decisions. I think 90% of pet owners, if costs were reasonable, would do whatever they could to help their pets. Sometimes it's just not possible.

I used to do that, long ago. Even had (for a brief moment) a kitty cam thread here on the Gee Bee so people could check out some wee (6 weeks old, maybe?) kitts that I was de-feralling for adoption.

Funnily enough, one of those kitts had deformed back legs. I ended up keeping him. He's in my lap right now! So that had to be...13 years ago? WTF

You mean "this very cool thread filled with love of all living creatures"...

...except the most vulnerable human beings among us.

I agree...

...I don't want to "hijack" it, either.

I'm really sorry for you and your companion, Haze. That's a really tough situation to be in. Care for your best buddy is beyond your reach, and you don't even know if it will work.

What I have learned is that when they snap at you from a simple touch, or chew their own flesh, they are in too much pain.

When they don't want to eat any more, it's their way of saying that they don't want to live any more.

It depends on your ability to pay,

personally i spent thousands of dollars on my dog in her later years,

and also on both of my cats.

On a side note, there are many good pet insurance companies,

which will cost you a monthly amount but will reimburse you up to 80 percent,

so you wont have to face such a difficult decision .

Dude did you even look at the initial Op date? I chuckled when I saw a Killswitch post with no 1...so there's that.
