My country doesn't exist

Yesterday I ordered a Coca Cola in a coffee shop.

I know. I shouldn't.

It came in a 500ml bottle with a glass half full of ice.

The bottle had been filled in Slovenia. A small sticker had been put on to give the ingredients in English.

I can't understand the economics of importing bottles of Coca Cola from Slovenia to the UK but it was here. I checked their display - all their Coca Cola bottles were from Slovenia.

Common Market woes?

I have no objection to sourcing Coca Cola from Slovenia.

There is a Coca Cola bottling plant less than 60 miles from me so why transport bottles all that way? The transport costs must be greater than the difference between production costs in the UK and Slovenia.

I could understand transporting Coca Cola in bulk tankers but in 500ml bottles?

The miles that food is transported unnecessarily is adding to the carbon in the atmosphere. If I had bought a generic cola, the nearest manufacturer was 300 yards from the cafe. (But the cafe didn't stock it.)

That's really odd! I think most of *ours* aren't bottled in Slovenia and carry stickers in Slovene. A conspiracy?
