I don't have any problem with viruses. Lucky I guess. I had this computer two years before I got McAfee (stupid, I know). But when I installed and ran it, there were no viruses anywhere. I don't get spam either. Hmmm...
 
It might be your connection. A broadband connection is a lot less secure and easier to spam and pollute with viruses. WHen I had dial up (a dark, dark time) I didn't even use a firewall.

I'm considering DSL. There is a pretty good DSL/digital cable package in my area right now. Of course it took years to get in out here in the boonies... ;)

But you know how I feel about change. :D
