For future reference, if you are forced to abandon your car at the side of the road, you are supposed to leave a note indicating the problem and that you are returning with a tow-truck.

Also, in some places, a tow-truck that finds an abandoned vehicle on the interstate, they are allowed to tow it away without waiting for the police. While in other places a tow truck isn't even allowed to stop if you wave him down.
