Now for my good news = )

The documentary my boyfriend made this last schoolyear, the reason I only saw him in passing when he'd let me have the car to go to work, the thing he babied with only two other people for months upon months, was accepted by a state-wide television station! WHOOO-HOOO!

He doesn't get any money for it, but it will look *wonderful* on his resume = ) I'm very happy for him.

Hopefully it won't play while we're in Brazil lol

It's called "Celebrating Deaf Culture" and it's about the deaf community where we live, and specifically about how the university of oregon doesn't recognize sign language as a language. It covers a protest at the UofO and a meeting with the Dean, and has an epilogue since after they filmed the UofO changed their policy to include sign language.

Sounds interesting I took sign language as a second language in high school, because my nephew was born deaf. Sign language is really the only way he could learn to talk. How elese do you teach someone who can't hear. The kid is so smart and even though he can't hear we have to be extra careful. With a person who can hear you can just whisper but he can read lips so he is excellent at ease dropping.

Chicklet,

Congratulations to your boyfriend!

A warning to you.

If this means your boyfriend is planning to pursue a career as a film director, be prepared for him to exist in a constant state of absentmindedness, punctuated by short bursts of euphoria.

Fabulous news for you and yours, Chicklet.

Congratulations to him!

Lou

Chicklet, that's wonderful. Congrats to him, and to you for whatever you put up with during the making of the doc. :)

I have a U. prof. friend who "translated" Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" into ASL and directed the production (each character had an ASL signer and speaking actor). He's currently working on a CD-ROM of the project for nationwide distribution. It gives Deaf students an insight into the play they cannot get merely through the text. I'll tell him about your bf's doc. if you let us know when it plays (perhaps PBS here will pick it up).

cheers, Perdita :rose:

lol

he's more interested in the editing process, but he *would* like to be an editor. He wants to go to film school fall 2004 (if he ever gets off his butt and takes the GRE)

Perd, I will definitely tell you guys when it plays, but I think only people in Oregon will be able to see it. (you mention PBS; they're the ones playing it here)

Congratulations, to both of you.

I've got a true "deaf" story your s/o might enjoy. In 1967, the local paper in Baton Rouge did a Sunday feature piece on the state school for deaf kids. The headline read, "Students Discovering New Worlds Through LSD."

When the powers-that-be were informed that LSD was the new drug of choice among the rising tide of god-less, degenerate, dope-taking hippies, they nearly killed themselves rushing to the state legislature to get the name change from La. School for the Deaf to La. State School for the Deaf. Somehow, LSSD never had the same ring.

OPB. That's awesome, Chicklet. Congrats. I'll be looking for it.

Congratulations! Hope he gets rave reviews when it airs. Let us know title and number so we can encourage our local PBS's to order it.

I can't see it, but I'm sure it's interesting. Wait... that makes it even worse!

Anywho... imagine the scandals in the newpapers in the future, when everyone finds out that the famous film-maker has a girlfriend who writes erotic stories for a website!

Imagine all the innuendos about them working on a porno movie...
