Last saturday I picked up a patient. She was a younger woman, all of 30 years old. She had a Radical Hysterectomy.

She was a total care patient, which means I bathed her. She was a shy patient, she was worried about being seen in the nude.

I handled her as I handle all of my patients, with a sense of humor and a bit of humanity. I treated her as a human being. I joked with her as I cleaned her up. I pushed her as I made her get out of bed and walk in the halls. I made her do as much as she could, hell I made her do more than she thought she could do. I also cleaned up her tears when she cried on my shoulder about what had happened to her. I also cleaned up her tears of shame when she left a mess in the bed.

This morning my boss informed me she had removed me from this patients care team, she had replaced me with a female Aide. (I'm used to this.) She then went into the patients room to talk with her. She informed her of the change in caregivers and why. She also questioned the patient about my care and actions towards her. She was very direct in her questions, to the point she angered the patient.

The patient called the Hospital Switchboard and managed to get hold of the C.E.O. She informed the C.E.O. who she was and where she was and that she wanted to register a complaint. The C.E.O. hurried up to the floor and after collecting my boss went into the room where he received an earful. (This was after the other Aide had gone into the room and taken care of the patient.)

The patient complained long and loud. She informed the C.E.O. that she felt my boss was a sexist Bitch. (Her words.) She informed the C.E.O. that she was disgusted by my bosses questions about my conduct and care of her. She claimed that my boss had seemed more interested in trying to find a reason, any reason, to claim sexual misconduct on my part. She informed the C.E.O. that my care and conduct had been above reproach and she felt more than comfortable with me taking care of her. (She also made some comments about the other Aides care of her, comments that were less than complimentary.)

My boss tried a rebuttal, claiming that the patient was dealing with something akin to Stockholm Syndrome. She had become attached to me because I was a male who had shown caring when she was in a vulnerable situation. She clained that this only reinforced her feelings. The patient then dropped her bombshell. It seems the patient is a Psychologist in the employ of the state.

Needless to say I was returned to her care team, and my boss is in a bit of trouble.

She deserves to be in more than a bit of trouble. I am inclined to agree with the patient that your boss is a sexist bitch.

Good for you Cat, definitely good to see that justice does work out. Most of my favorite nurses or aides or EMT's have been males. I always love to read your stories like this, they always make me grin and cheer.

About time dontcha think?

We have been waiting a long time for something to happen to this beotch!

My brother was in a serious accident almost 10 yrs ago, after almost losing him 3 times and the decision to keep his leg, he was transfered to our local hospital. They kept him close to the nurses station because of his needs, he had broke his sacrum and had two broken hips so he couldnt move around much. The only person to this day that actually asks how he is doing is a male nurse. He use to come in where I had been working and ask how my brother was making out after he was discharged. Just the other day I was getting groceries and saw this nurse, he rushed over and asked once again how Ed was making out. I told him he was working two jobs, now married and has a 1.5 yr old baby girl. He smiled and said, "Isn't that amazing, and here we weren't sure if he would make it through the night at the beginning."

After a hug and wiping away a few tears on both our parts, he asked me to keep in touch.

Come to find out, he and his wife could never have children, my brother was only in his early 20s so Ken took him under his wing and touched his heart.

Keep up the great work SeaCat!

It's nice to see the good ones win one, Cat. :)

Here's hoping your boss learns that it's about taking care of your patients, not scoring political points.

I hope that your boss gets her ass kicked. I am a certified nursing assistant and I know how hard you must work. The gender of your caregiver shouldn't matter as long as they are caring and professional. Watch your back, it sounds like she has it in for you.

Cat

Isn't it your job to show caring towards your patients? This one really befuddles me...

Glad to hear that your boss is getting some come-uppance. I wish you the best in your stuggles at work as always.

Sorry CAT. This is the world we live in today. And its sad.

I dealt with the same thing working for the state. CRIME WATCH is notorious for sticking its nose into official investigations, and if you nicely tell them to get lost, they whine to the governor that we dont take them seriously, and you end up apologizing to them for sticking their noses where they dont belong.

Keep up the good work!

Jim

Bet you'd never hear any complaints about a female nurse tending to a male patient. Bah, what a load of hooey.

I'm glad this patient had the balls to do something about it. I really feel for all the patients who are happy in their nursing, then have it changed for some political reason and don;t feel strong enough to complain...

It's the Andrea Dworkin/Susan Brownmiller syndrome: All men are constantly trying to rape any woman they can.

My daughter has VATERS Association and has had male nurses on occassion and they have been wonderful. Heck, she sees seven specialists besides her peds and they are all men but her pulminologist.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication, it is appreciated far more than you ever know!:rose::rose::rose:

I'll second that thought for every nurse out there :rose:

Two neck surgeries and 4 on the knees (before the scope)
I owe nurses a lot! :D

I don't know you very well, but every time I read you Cat?

You leave me with the impression that you are one of the real good ones.

If I ever met you I'd probably be bawling in about three seconds.

telling you my goddamned life story, no doubt.

good to hear this .

Going back to read your santa story..

Ah, so it is policy then?

I second what someone here already said. Watch your back. This might come back later.

I have two favorites nurses cat, charlie and greg, both male and both took care of me the most during all my surgeries at shriners. They rotated to different positions during different times of my many years going there. If they were there during my surgery I would often wake up to find them in recovery with me sitting and waiting for me to open my eyes and then they were off to their normal duties. If they did recovery rotation then they would come sit with me in my room later. If they were on the floor I'd wake up in recovery and find one of them their waiting patiently for me to open my eyes.

Neither ever had to do what they did but I am damn glad they did. There were many wonderful women nurses as well but charlie and greg knew me and looked after me even when I wasn't one of their patients. They even knew when I had a slight crush o one of the doctors at 16 and I was so uncomfortable being naked on that table in front of him and they made sure I was covered to the neck and focused on them until I was asleep.

to men like you, greg and charlie I am very very glad y'all are nurses. People trying to stitch you up is horrible and I'm glad she didn't get away with it.:rose::heart:

This has been a problem for Cat for a long time.

I am so glad your patient was eloquent and authoritative! :rose:

You're one of the good ones, Cat. I've seen enough nurses, good and bad, to know the difference. :rose: x 12 in appreciation from me and all the others who've been in a situation similar to your patient's.

Edited to add: keep us updated, will ya?

What a wonderful bit of news, SeaCat! That's one of those lovely little nuggets you just want to roll around on the tongue and... savor for a while, it's so good.

A thousand congratulations!
