D.O.A

I landed at the shore of what I discovered to be a small lake, in the cover of some tangled thickets. I had flown slow and low the last few miles, not wanting to attract any unwanted attention. I could see across the murky water to a small settlement. I didn't know who lived there. Could be a group of Geno-Hunter's for all I knew.

I knelt at the edge, my knees in the water. Pulling off my gloves, and tucking them into my belt, I scooped some water up in my palms. I gargled with the foul-tasting stuff for a couple of minutes, not needing to stop to take a breather, before swallowing it.

That was better. My throat no longer felt dry, anyway. Now all I needed was something to get rid of the god awful taste that water had left in my mouth.

I pulled off my jacket, opened my pack, and fished around for the patches, needle and thread. Might as well get it fixed while there was still some light left. Could take a closer look at the place across the lake tommorrow, or maybe tonight. I had a lot of time on my hands. Like hunger and thirst, sleep was no longer a concern for me.

Pyro

"Sounds promising. I'll go check it out." I say and start moving down the hall towards the stairway. My steps get slower as the hallway grows darker, and I pause. I had never felt this uncomfortable in this building before... I start a fall fire in the palm of my hand, and work my way up the staircase guided by its flickering light.

i spend a restless night alone in bed, waking up in a much warmer bed. i softly kiss him on forehead trying not to think of trouble.

i cuddle up next to him not wanting to get out of bed.

Pyro

The night passes quietly as I stand atop the old elevator shack at the top of the building. I grow weary, but my eyes never stray from watching the horizon. By the time dawn comes, my sleepiness overcomes my fear and I decide to give up watch.

Too tired to even think about finding a replacement and comforted by the sunlight, I wander down stairs to find Violet sleeping soundly in bed. I cuddle up next to her, her skin cool to my warm touch and promptly close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

after playing whith the cat for a fuw hours I dust my self off and go to the kichin to git my self a glass of woter. when I git back to wer the cat wos it's gon I sherg and go to the grave to finsh the the stone.

I chisil the werds "her lys my only love tonya she shall always have my undying love." then I chesil roses all over the stone. Wen it's dun I put it at the head of the grave. I stand over it until the sun go's down. ters runing down my face unnotist.

When I notis that it is dark I go to my room and lay down but can't sleep so I go out and tern wolf and start troting around the perimiter of the old scool. ocashinoly finding and killing dangres unnacherul crechers. finly at midnight my reslisnes fades so I go back to my room and sleep.

The big cat prowls the grounds and catches a meal through the night. As the sky starts to lighten, she pads back to the lake and curls up by the edge of the water for a bit of a nap. (She's a cat. Taking a nap is a big part of her life.)

Sitting on my haunches near the treeline, I curled my tail around me and stared morosely at nothing. Remembering the past is impossible, nothing but a long blank void. Feelings of unease don't help either. Something to the west of us is giving me a restless feeling. All of this made me broodish. I sighed and my ears drooped.

The only Teams with women on them did things I didn't want to think about. Had I done those things?

Throwing my head back I howled, feeling the long undulating wolf meloday, as sad and lonely as I felt, rolling through my throat and echoing across the landscape.

D.O.A

Half way through the night, I heard the howl of a dog. Wild dog's were quite common, now, but usually gave me a wide berth. Those that didn't soon learnt to. Nothing gives indigestion like meat that just won't stop squirming.

I picked up my pack, shouldering it, and started to walk round the lake's shore towards the small settlement. I didn't want to get too close, yet. Was this place the one I had heard rumours about? If it was - if such a place existed - I wanted to make sure before introducing myself.

I didn't want to be the cause of any more deaths.

I may not be affected by disease, but I was still a carrier. Besides the tests the scientists had ran on my tolerance for pain and regenerative abilities, they had also tested my immune system. Which was, with me being dead and all, pretty much non-existant. They had infected me with some, as they said, 'very virulent strains'.

Most of which were of the fatal variety. At least, to other people. That was why I had travelled alone for the last few years, trying to keep as far away as possible from others. It was a chance meeting with a couple of guys a few months back - who I kept at a distance - who had told me of a possible solution to my problem, once I had told them it, and they had wasted a few rounds on me.

If it wasn't for my regenerative power, I was sure that I'd look like a real corpse by now. And it wasn't as if I got enough strange looks from those people I met as it was, without looking like some rotting zombie to boot.

The cat had just drifted to sleep before the dawn would break, when she felt the ground nudge up against her. Her head popped up as she quickly awakened. Something was wrong. She shook her head and looked around. She felt the ground ripple right around her. She stayed curled up, not actually bothered by the ground movement. She somehow understood it wasn't the danger. She raised her nose and sniffed, then tasted, the air. Then she understood. Even though she's not a nose hunting animal, she could smell the problem. A strange odor of death and life. Something unnatural. A threat? Her hair bristled along her back as she stood up began to stalk the owner of this scent.

As she silently padded, keeping downwind of the scent, along the edge of the lake, she spotted the movement with those magnificent feline-eyes of hers. It looks like those other humans, but it's wrong. It's unnatural. But it's not threatening her. She shivers and her skin crawls as she smells the death/life odor again, and stops. The human is not prey, and doesn't seem to be predator. She can return to her nap. The ground ripple around her again, though more weakly. Her ears prop up in mild confusion. As the ground continues rippling, she understands. She is to follow this creature. Make sure it is not a threat to the humans. Well, that's okay with her. She kind of likes the one that played with her earlier. Okay, she'll do as she's been asked. She continues to silently follow this person, stalking silently, her green and yellow coat blending with the tall grass around the lake, especially in the dark. She stays ready for action as she flexes her claws and follows.

D.O.A.

I stopped a short distance from the settlement, just within sight of some of the people I saw about.

"Hello over there!" I shouted, waving my arms, "I want to speak with someone!"

I stood stock still, waiting for a reply. A couple of people grabbed up rifles, and aimed at me. Oh no, not more holes in my jacket.

"I come in peace!" I shouted.

I wake and sens somthing like me but defrint I go to the window and see som on at the edg of the setilment. I telaport my self right in front of hem. I smile as jupps back in suprise. I say hello.

As I say hello I sens the big cat is whoching from the shadows. The stranger ses he coms in pic so I signil the others to lower ther guns. I smile slitly and say welcom.

D.O.A.

Suddenly, a guy just appeared in front of me. I jumped back - to hover a couple of feet off the ground in my surprise, before slowly settling back down, as he greeted me.

"Hello" I replied, with a nod, "I'm looking for a healer... look, it might be best if you keep your distance from me. For your own safety".

He disappeared and reappeared a little distance away.

"What do you want with our healer?"

"My names dee oh a" I said, "stands for dead on arrival, in case you don't know. I don't know my real name, if I even had one. I've... got some serious diseases... fatal even..."

ok I say I'll go git violit and my name is nightray. I disaper and stand in front of pyro and violits door I noke when they anser I say som one is wating for you violit I think he needs som heling. He meens us no harme so don't wery I'll met you ther.

I transport my self back to the D.O.A. he jumps agen I smile and say she will be her soon. I wolk up to hem and say you now ther is nothing you can do to harm me perminitly.

"Thanks" I say, with another nod, "but I've been responsible, partly in least, for too many deaths... and I don't want any more on my hands... I'm hoping this healer, Violet you say?... can help me..."

I'm 70 year old and still look 21 and I hav had whot shold be deth blose and all ways I git back up. I'v had every almost evry viris most of them dedly and I'm still her.

"Well, can't say how old I am... but, there's little that can do me any harm, at least not for long. Once you've been ground through a meat grinder a couple of times, you kinda know that. But, a lot of the diseases I carry were genetically engineered..."

I shrug and say I'm willing to resk it the only thing that relly made my life werth living is ded now so I don't rily kaer any more.

My howling fades off into the distance. Pricking my ears and testing the wind, I smell for any threat. Nothing but a vague uneasiness coming from the west. Something is coming.

Reluctantly, I trot back to the campus, whining in my throat. A new arrival. Sitting on my haunches some distance away, I prepare to defend the campus if necessary, but it doesn't appear necessary. Whining in the back of my throat, I watch things unfold.

i manage to drag myself out of bed with the knocking on doow, i place hand on pyro's forehead keeping him asleep i stretch and wrap myself up in a purple robe, i was still tired, and felt different, as last night was first night in long time I hadn't made love with pyro. i jogged outside as i sensed urgency coming from muffin and was wide awake as I approached the corpse was first word that came to mind.

"Hello, I'm Violet," I pause slowly walking towards him, "I'm immune to most everything and I do have to touch you to detect the depth of your illness." i cock my head to side as i slowly reach out one hand slightly trembling as i can smell decay and growth combined in one being.

D.O.A.

I pulled off my right glove, holding my hand forward.

"Very well" I said, "though I am not ill, as such... I am simply unable to fight of the diseases which I have - which I have been given - only able to hold them in check. Of course, that doesn't help others I come into contact with..."

She touched my hand, and I felt momentarily dizzy.

"You've got no pulse..." she murmured, looking confused.

"Oh, sorry..." I said, forcing my heart to beat again, then added with a grin, "that better?"

I glanced at the large dog... wolf?... sat nearby, then to the strange large cat in the other direction, and back to the healer, Violet.

"Well, whats the verdict doc?"

violet

my eyes close briefly as i send my senses through him innately understanding his genetic structure and the multitude of diseases.

"how long can you stay dead? several of the virus's won't live in a dead host, but your body keeps them alive, just as it keeps you alive. Or I can accelerate the diseases, once they take their course you will be immune in sense, your body could heal itself than fighting them off. You'd always be a carrier for the diseases though. Your blood will be deadly to anyone it touches."

I bite my lip and nod to muffin and nightray, "I'll be fine, wake pyro up and have him prepare a isolated clean room."

"Brroooowf." I say, ooops. Forgot again. I trot up to Violet, and rub against her a moment, to let her know I understood, then I galloped off to wake up Pyro and relay her instructions. It's a good thing he only had eyes for Violet, I had to shift human for a few moments to do it.

Returning to where Violet was with the newcomer, I sat down and lolled my tongue out, panting with the heat. "Rrruufff." Oops.

He is working on it, he said he'll be done soon.

"You shouldn't be near him, he has too many deadly diseases." Violet admonishes, pushing me away. "I'm immune, you aren't."

Of course I'm immune, I am Were. Everything heals but death. Somethings take longer than others, like cuts and broken bones. Diseases just don't 'take' with me.

Canting my head to the side, I whine deep in my throat. I'm starting to like the were more and more. It wasn't the nightmare it had been with the lunatics across the rockies. It was, well, natural to me now, rather than a thing of evil.

D.O.A.

"Well... my heart doesn't need to beat, to keep me alive... none of my organs have too... but lack of oxygen does effect the brain, even for me, so however long I can starve my mind of oxygen is how long I can 'stay' dead... but, whichever you think is the best course... I'm no doctor. I put myself in your hands".

I go with the wolf and tell pyro that he can put the now one in the same bilding as me his desesis can't harm me.

When we git to my bilding we cler a room next to mine.
