Radical Muslims in France's housing estates are waging an undeclared "intifada" against the police, with violent clashes injuring an average of 14 officers each day.As the interior ministry said that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year, a police union declared that its members were "in a state of civil war" with Muslims in the most depressed "banlieue" estates which are heavily populated by unemployed youths of north African origin. It said the situation was so grave that it had asked the government to provide police with armoured cars to protect officers in the estates, which are becoming no-go zones. The number of attacks has risen by a third in two years. Police representatives told the newspaper Le Figaro that the "taboo" of attacking officers on patrol has been broken. Instead, officers - especially those patrolling in pairs or small groups - faced attacks as soon as they tried to arrest locals. Senior officers insisted that the problem was essentially criminal in nature, with crime bosses on the estates fighting back against tough tactics. The interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, who is also the leading centre-Right candidate for the presidency, has sent heavily equipped units into areas with orders to regain control from drug smuggling gangs and other organised crime rings.

Such aggressive raids were "disrupting the underground economy in the estates", one senior official told Le Figaro. However, not all officers on the ground accept that essentially secular interpretation. Michel Thoomis, the secretary general of the hardline Action Police trade union, has written to Mr Sarkozy warning of an "intifada" on the estates and demanding that officers be given armoured cars in the most dangerous areas. He said yesterday:

"We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists. This is not a question of urban violence any more, it is an intifada, with stones and Molotov cocktails. You no longer see two or three youths confronting police, you see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their 'comrades' free when they are arrested." He added: "We need armoured vehicles and water cannon. They are the only things that can disperse crowds of hundreds of people who are trying to kill police and burn their vehicles." However, Gerard Demarcq, of the largest police unions, Alliance, dismissed talk of an "intifada" as representing the views of only a minority. Mr Demarcq said that the increased attacks on officers were proof that the policy of "retaking territory" from criminal gangs was working.


So there you have it. Is France seeing the beginning of an 'intifada' or is this simply the misbehavior of dangerously alienated 'immigrant' (many are French-born) youths or is it, instead, a case of organized criminal activity? It's impossible to say, I suspect. If I had to guess, we are seeing examples of all three: the real problem comes when they all blend.

French chickens are apparently coming home to roost. The French, who for years have been one of Israel’s most serious critics, accusing Israel of terrorism regarding the Arabs who want to eliminate them, while cozying up to those same Moslem/Arab countries, seem to have an intifada of their own. At least many of the French police think so.

France, which colonized what are now Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia in North Africa, and only reluctantly withdrew about 45 years ago after bloody revolutions, has a large immigrant population of these former colonials and their descendants. Last year these French citizens returned French hospitality by rioting nightly in their immigrant neighborhoods, burning cars, destroying other property while clashing violently with police. This year, once again, they’re

waging an undeclared “intifada” against the police, with violent clashes injuring an average of 14 officers each day.

Other French officials disagree that this is a homegrown intifada, instead blaming it on more effective police work or resentment and rioter joblessness. All of this might be true in some degree; what cannot be denied is that this is occurring all over France and will probably get worse before the situation improves.

Meanwhile on the diplomatic front, France is still criticizing Israel.

French "Youths" Attack Police Again


As the French Intifada continues: Police ‘ambushed’ and stoned by gang in Paris suburb.

Police had to use their firearms to escape from a gang of youths who allegedly ambushed and stoned a police car in a suburb north of Paris at the weekend - the fourth incident of its kind in recent weeks. One policeman was seriously injured by stones hurled by youths. His two colleagues fired their weapons over the heads of gang members in a housing estate in the normally calm suburb of Epinay-sur-Seine. Their patrol car was trapped when a driverless vehicle was rolled behind it by a group of up to 50 youths, according to police.

The incident is one of several serious clashes between police and youth gangs across Paris suburbs in recent weeks as the anniversary of last year’s riots approaches. Previous incidents, described as “ambushes” by the police, have later proved to be more confused and unplanned. Right-wing politicians claimed yesterday that there was a co-ordinated campaign to provoke an incident and raise tensions.

In the most recent incident, on Friday night, a police car was sent to investigate reports of muggings in the Ogrement district of Epinay, a poor area haunted by drugs gangs and sporadic violence. The police car was attacked with stones and baseball bats and one policeman, Christophe Estève, 30, was hit in the face.

Police said that the officers had been “ambushed” by up to 50 youths. Local people said that no more than 20 youths were involved, and that the incident began when the police began to interrogate forcefully two youths intercepted on the street.

Arnaud De Borchgrave has a remarkable report on France’s civil war. The big news here is that Jean-Marie Le Pen’s far right National Front has given up its opposition to Muslim immigration and has instead allied with Muslims, taking America and the Jews as its primary targets. This shift has provoked a split in the movement, with conservative Christians refusing to go along. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic incidents are at epidemic proportions in France.

I’d like to see more than one report on this (there’s not a lot of detail here), but this news is stunning, if true. It immediately brings to mind Mark Steyn’s new book, America Alone, which I’m reviewing for NRODT. Steyn argues that, under pressure of a growing Muslim population, ever more non-Muslims will be coopted, or even convert. If De Borchgrave is right about Le Pen’s flip, it would be an early and rather spectacular confirmation of Steyn’s argument. On the other hand, Steyn predicts that a rump of traditionalists Europeans will eventually fall into civil war with Europe’s surging Islamists. At this rate, though, Europe may flip more easily than even Steyn believes.

The French government yesterday held crisis talks with community leaders in an effort to halt mounting violence in suburbs around Paris, amid news that gangs of youths, mainly of North African descent, were intensifying attacks on police.Dominique de Villepin, the prime minister, ordered his interior and justice ministers to "toughen up" sentences for those found guilty of assaulting officers, following a meeting with community leaders. His announcement followed a series of violent incidents over the past weeks, culminating in the ambush of three police officers on Friday by youths in Epinay-sur-Seine, north of Paris. "These guys came to kill. They wore balaclavas, and had baseball bats and iron bars," said Joaquin Masanet, the general secretary of the powerful UNSA police union. The three officers from the anti-crime brigade, BAC, entered the Orgemont housing estate after an anonymous caller reported a violent car theft. Once inside, their exit was barred and they were set upon by around 50 youths, who pelted the men with stones. Iron bars smashed their windscreen. They tried to reverse, but a second vehicle boxed them in. The criminals fled only after the officers fired live ammunition into the air and police reinforcements arrived.

French May Fire On Israeli Overflights
After injecting themselves into the Lebanon crisis and making all kinds of promises they didn’t intend to keep, France and the United Nations have made it explicitly clear that they will not use force to disarm Hizballah, or to prevent weapons from being smuggled in from Syria.

But Israeli Air Force overflights, to keep watch over the terrorists? Now there’s something the French are willing to fight against: Peretz: French UNIFIL say will fire at IAF overflights. (Hat tip: Shiplord Kirel.)

Commanders of the French contingent of the United Nations force in Lebanon have warned that they might have to open fire if Israel Air Force warplanes continue their overflights in Lebanon, Defense Minister Amir Peretz told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday.

Peretz said that nevertheless, Israel would continue to patrol the skies over Lebanon as long as United Nations resolution 1701 remained unfilfilled, adding that such operations were critical for the country’s security, especially as the abducted IDF soldiers remain in Hezbollah custody and the transfer of arms continue.

Over the past few days, Peretz said, Israel had gathered clear evidence that Syria was transfering arms and ammunition to Lebanon, meaning that the embargo imposed by UN Resolution 1701 was not being completely enforced.

At the New Republic, Richard Landes reports on France 2 television’s increasingly desperate attempts to keep the truth from getting out about one of the biggest media frauds of recent years: How French TV fudged the death of Mohammed Al Durah.

I have become involved for two reasons. First of all, I noted almost immediately that Palestinians and anti-Zionists, insisting that Israel killed the boy on purpose, used Al Durah in a way familiar to medievalists—as a blood libel. This was the first blood libel of the twenty-first century, rendered global by cable and the Internet. Indeed, within a week, crowds the world over shouted “We want Jewish blood!” and “Death to the Jews!”. For Europeans in particular, the libelous image came as balm to a troubled soul: “This death erases, annuls that of the little boy in the Warsaw Gherro,” intoned Europe1 editorialist Catherine Nay. The Israelis were the new Nazis.

And second, when I saw the raw footage in the summer of 2003—especially when I saw the scene Enderlin had cut, wherein the boy (allegedly shot in the stomach, but holding his hand over his eyes) picks up his elbow and looks around—I realized that this was not a film of a boy dying, but a clumsily staged scene.

On October 31, 2003, at the studios of France2 in Jerusalem in the company of Charles Enderlin and his Israeli cameraman, I saw the raw footage of Al Durah from the only Palestinian cameraman who actually captured the scene on film—footage France2 still refuses to release for public examination. I was floored. The tapes feature a long succession of obviously faked injuries; brutal, hasty evacuation scenes; and people ducking for cover while others stand around. One fellow grabbed his leg in agony, then, upon seeing that no one would come to carry him away, walked away without a limp. It was stunning. That was no cameraman’s conspiracy: It was everyone—a public secret about which news consumers had no clue.
