I play the guitar. Admittedly not very well as I've only been learning for a few months but at least it's something.

Anyone else play an instrument?

Just myself, "chuckle", although I do crave magical fingers who play me like an instrument.

Used to play the trumpet and at this point could probably still play "mary had a little lamb"

Barbara

Huh huh, You said play the organ.

Yeah Yeah, Organ!

I've played Bass guitar for 9 years or so.

Yes

I've played the piano for sixteen years.

I also played the flute and the drums for eight years, but I haven't touched either of them since 1996. I do still play the piano though.

Played clarinet (all versions) for 6 years, piano for the past 18 years and organ occasionally.

Blimey...

You guys make me feel really crap now :)

The most annoying this is that all my friends see a guitar in my room, and then suddenly postulate that I must be as good as Eric Clapton or Jimmy Hendrix!

So, any of you piano players as good as Jools Holland? If you don't know who he is then ignore me :)

I know that I am, in fact, as good as Paul McCartney or Jamerson. :p

lavender...

Can you belt out Darth Vader's theme on the organ?

I remember back in school, when we used to have mass in the mornings and the organ player(normally a student) would play the tradional march as the headmaster and undermaster walked to the stand. The organ player was a friend of mine, and he told me he always had the temptation to play the Imperial March because the undermaster was a real dictator and all around sonofabitch :D

I played the organ and the flute and I sucked at it. I forgot how. Now the only flute I play is the organ attached to the StudMuffin. He says I'm a maestro. I say no, I'm a muffin, pay attention. Men. *shakes head*

I could if I were given the music.

Or, if you gave me about 2 hours to play it by ear. I'm not really wonderful at playing things that are too difficult by ear. I'm too anal about all the correct notes, and making it sound perfect. :)

That must take ages to play by ear!
It's a bit easier on the guitar....I've surprised myself by picking up a couple of songs by listening to them.
Sometime i'm surprised at how easy it is to play songs. For example, Oasis(british band for those who don't know) have some excellent songs, and when I learned to play some I was surprised at how easy they are! They have the wonderful trick of making very simple chords into really catchy songs.....

Very true, AFM. "She's Electric" is a great example. All light and poppy and only uses chords that are really easy to switch between(E, G sharp seventh , C sharp minor and A if memory serves, the chorus is just C, D and E)

The worse thing is those chords are exactly the same as "Married with Children" but they're played differently!

"Married with Children" is a brilliant song as well.....but the easiest to play is "Wonderwall".

The real problem i have as a novice is playing and singing seperately...

For example, the songs I have leared by ear on the piano, include REM Nightswimming. Mark Cohn Walking in Memphis, some Tori Amos songs and so forth.

Oooh I love Nightswimming and Walking in Memphis!
You can play Broadway? Let's do a musical baby! twirls top hat

I really love the first two Oasis albums. Digsy's Diner and Don't look back in Anger are fave's of mine. Wonderwall isn't the easiest to play on Bass but it is real simple.

I had that problem too but I would suggest you try playing Sweet Caroline while singing it. It's so easy and the singing is so seperated from the guitar work that it is pretty easy to do both. And as always, Practice. I had to buy a new Bass so that I could do both with confidence :)

Yep, I play Broadway stuff. Tons of it actually. I think I have been the accompanist for about 20 different shows. I have even been the musical director for a few of them.

*eyes turning to hearts*

I think i'm in love :D

Is there anything you can't do?

I need a new guitar too.....finally got enough money to buy a really nice acoustic :)

I've been practiscing a lot....the real bitch is that I've put some chords together but I can't put vocals to it because of my inability to sing seperately!:(
So i'm gonna get my friend to help me instead.....

Yeah but to facilitate the singing and playing at the same time I had to buy a 5 string. Makes them high notes easy to reach!

I meant you should Practice playing and singing at once. There ain't no magic formula, its just try and try and try. :D

Not just to make you feel better, but...

I will admit to at one time mastering "Mary Had a Little Lamb", Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "The Marine's Hymn" on the clarinet. A dog bite and six stitches in my upper lip ended my career as an instrumentalist, but I think that only accelerated my demise. (I never mastered the scales, reading music, or following the conductor's directions -- just those three songs.)
