Music when writing?

Hi everyone. Since I'm new here and don't know anyone, I thought I'd start a thread about what music people listen to when they write. Or if you listen to anything at all.

Personally, I'm a metal-head, and I usually listen to death metal and the like because I like to not be able to understand most of the lyrics while I write (and most death metal-type music is just a "singer" grunting the words unintelligably--at least to me! :D ). I just want the heavy music to sustain me. I've also been known to write with instermentals--soundtracks to fantasy-type movies and the like.

How about you?

NONE!! And when I write I have to sign out of Lit. If I don't the perv radar goes off and I get 100's of "Hey... you have a cam?" PMs

I have various playlists for various moods and pieces.

You really don't want to know what I'm listening to right now.

Same problem for me but the other way around. If I don't log off from Lit, I'm still in perv mode and have to send PMs to all the cuties. ;)

And no music.

Same here, but there are also times when music is too distracting for what I'm trying to do and I choose to go without.

It depends on my mood and the piece I'm working on.

I absolutely have to have some music on when I write, I find I get unnerved and get distracted far too often without it. Like if there's any kind of noise I quickly turn to see what it is, but having music on helps keep that at bay. I don't have it on too loud because then I can't think. As for what I play, it's usually a mix of things. I have all my music set up and let it go randomly. Gives me a good mix of stuff. And if I happen upon something I don't like I just remove it from the playlist. I don't have the patiencde to make a favorites list.

Thinking about this, Aurora, I find it depends on what I'm writing. If it's a fuck scene music of any kind is ok. I just turn it off in my head. Humor has to be absolutly silent so I can hear in my head how the line reads.

Example: “Yeah. Let da mook in, Canola Nuts. We’ll have us a little sit down before we do his ass.”

“Do his ass?” Dick thought. He didn’t like the sound of that, wishing he could cross his legs.

The problem with humor is not what you say but how it's said, the element of surprise, the way it sounds and in inuendo that forms in the mind of the reader.

Almost any other Catagory I don't care if there's music one way or the other, as long as I'm not interupted.

No music.

I have ADD, and the noises from the street in front of the house are distracting enough, much less anything INSIDE the house.

I've been enjoying the quiet but sometimes I like certain music. I get distracted too sometimes and...........oh look at that, what does this button do?

I must have silence. Music would be too distracting and would drive me crazy. I love music -- but, it has its place. When I'm writing, it has to be quiet.

Silence.

I listen to music to "get me into the mood" to write. And, a lot of times, I find myself listening to the music I imagine my characters would listen to.

I too listen to music to get myself in a writing mood and then turn it off when I start writing, usually. Sometimes, though, I have to listen to songs as a distraction (one can't get too into one's stories, you know?) and when that happens the music often makes its way into the piece.

Like when I'm reading stories, I'll have music on in the background until I notice it, and then it's off for the rest of the duration. It distracts me too much once I know it's there.

It all depends on when and where I'm writing. If I'm working on the patio, the music would have to be so loud that it would be distracting. If I'm inside then I like to have some music playing low, just to give me some background.

The type of music is also determined by what I'm writing. Right now I'm surfing, so now I have new Country playing. If I'm working on a story it's going to be either Classical or instrumentals.

I'm with Cat on this one - It all depends on what I'm writing...although I don't listen to country; sorry...

Usually, since I write mainly poetry and it's mostly of the darker nature, the songs playing are usually melancholy. Sister Soleil is a big favorite, Mazzy Star, Tori Amos always strikes a chord inside of me, Ani Difranco when I'm feeling all ultra feminist-y, Diabase Collective is also a new favorite of mine. ( ahem, Liar... :p ) I really like the female singers.

It depends on what I am writing .

If I write technical stuffs for job , or I write in a foreigner language ( English is not my first language for istance :) ) I prefer the silence , if I write poetry or tales in my own language I like to listen some music. Mainly classical , sometimes world music but however rigorously instrumental music cause words take my attention off the writing . :) :rose:

I don't listen to music when I'm writing; I get distracted because I end up listening to the lyrics. However, I clean my house and shake my butt to ABBA. ;)
