I've picked up a few Samplers from Amazon - albums they post for free to showcase new bands. They run the gamut of genre's including very heavy metal. Some of that music is pretty good, even the heaviest of metal guitar work. What I can't stand is the distorted demon voice growl. You can't possibly pick out the lyrics even if you had them listed in front of you.

So ... what's the point? Why distort the vocals so much and basically ruin the great guitar work? Some of it I can tolerate if it's in brief segments.

Not a huge fan of the heaviest of metals like death metal due to unable to understand lyrics myself. Perhaps listing lyrics helps. Once you have read them you can distinguish them.

Have a younger buddy I play D&D with who is a HUGE death metal fan I will try to remember and ask him. Although he is a guitarist first and foremost.

Most modern metal vocals are usually not about the lyrics.

They are used primarily as another textural and or percussive instrument, lyrics are secondary.

Examples....

Rings of Saturn - "Godless Times" (technical prog Deathcore/Djent) it's pretty much metal for other musicians.

Whitechapel - "Our Endless War" (Deathcore)

And

Wage War - "The River" (Djent/Deathcore)

It doesn't get any more Br00tal or heavy than that shit right there. I understand all these bands just fine but I've been listening to Cannibal Corpse since I was 10 so.....

Then there is more traditional M'arican metal, which while still distorted most people can understand 99% of the lyrics.

Examples

Lamb of God - Ghost Walking (Pure M'arican metal)

It only takes a little focus to pick most of what this guy is saying up....but he does bounce back and forth.
AFTER THE BURIAL - Lost In The Static (djent as fuck)

This track is clean singing and the guy has some pipes.
Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache

If I could find some of them in instrumentals, I might like them better.

Ministry is about as far as I can push my taste for metal. And even the Ministry stuff I like is rather dated and old school.

I got some death metal CDs long ago to play when I didn't want people to bother me.

Awesome tune. One of my faves.

When I turned 40 my music tastes broadened. Gained an appreciation for punk, metal and even country. Before was 60s hippy stuff, 50s rock 'n roll, 70s progressive and classical. A Clockwork Orange made me a classical fan.
