Munich mall shooting: Police 'expect multiple dead'

Munich police say multiple people were killed or wounded in a shooting at a shopping mall in the German city today.

More than one gunman was believed to be involved and no one has been arrested, a police spokeswoman said. An official death tally has not been released.

"We believe we are dealing with a shooting rampage," the spokeswoman said.

Police said witnesses reported seeing three people with guns.

"At the moment no culprit has been arrested," police in the Bavarian capital said on social media. "The search is taking place at high speed."

President Obama gave an announcement and gave sympathy for the victims at 4:00 in the afternoon.

A major police operation is underway after eight people were shot dead in the Olympia shopping center in Munich. People have been warned to stay indoors as police search for up to 3 attackers.

The latest announcement by dw is that they are searching north of the city of Munich.

Up to twenty people were injured, according to police spokesman Peter Beck in Munich. The city remains in lockdown as the search continues. The suspected gunman died by suicide, according to Munich police. In the chaotic aftermath of the incident, there were reports of three people with guns near the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall.

Gunman Kills 9 in Munich Mall Shooting Rampage, Then Kills Self: Police

A lone 18-year-old gunman is believed to have carried out a shooting rampage near a shopping center in Munich, Germany, killing at least nine people before later apparently killing himself, police said.

The shooting attack at a McDonald's attached to the Olympia Einkaufszentrum shopping center at around 5:50 p.m. local time (11:50 a.m. ET) Friday led authorities to lock down the city. Public transportation was shut down and residents were warned to stay away from public places.

"Careful all-clear," Munich police said on Twitter early Saturday. "As part of our manhunt we found one person that killed himself. With high probability it is the suspect, who — according to the present state of investigation — acted alone."

The gunman was an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich who had been living in the city for more than two years, Munich Police President Hubertus Andrae said. A motive is unknown, he said.
