Multiple projects

Your thread prompted me to review my rather lengthy list of projects. It's past time to clear it out a bit by moving things I haven't touched in six months into the Inactive WiP folder. One of the first ones I opened was actually a completed draft that I missed moving into the editing queue. Oops!

I will say, finding a completed draft I had forgotten about was a rather pleasant surprise.

I have four or five incomplete works. I am trying desperately to finish them, but one of them is an enormous story that I pick at when I'm bored, and some are very niche works that are hard to work on.

I have an entire folder of unfinished works that range from short stories, to series, to novels. It helps when something comes along and blocks my inspiration for a project I'm working on. I'll open up one of the others and see where it takes me. If that one doesn't work, I move to a different one. Usually I can find one of them to work on.

I currently have somewhere between 20-30 stories, that I've started.
I work on 1 story a day, IF I have time after work, and errands.
I get a LOT of requests as well.

Do you have multiple stories that you are working on?
I have three unfinished stories in the making.
One for the Halloween contest that I hope to finish today or tomorrow. And two other stories
I feel kind of guilty towards myself for not finishing one project before moving on to another. And sometimes my ADHD brain get a little overwhelmed by it.
But sometimes I get an Idea and end up starting something new.
I also have a bunch of ideas and fragments of stories that may or may not make it into a story.

Sorry, just wanted to vent a bit. I have two stories open on my PC right now and are writing on both of them lol.

Yes. Several. Along with a few ideas I want to get to. Then I feel bad for leaving people waiting for chapters. The downside to long series; they make it tough to write one-offs.

I have eight or so WIP's that can be considered active. Four of those have actually had someting written in them this year. Two are supposed to be published this year but are heroically resisting my efforts to finish them.

I've been writing stories for over 20 years at this point ... My WIP folder started four computers ago. It... Currently has an undisclosed number of works in it. I will not be showing the state of my WIP folder...

It’s really rewarding having people to discuss stuff with. Including each other’s writing.

I’ve been privileged enough to see some amazing works grow from tiny acorns to mighty oaks.
What do you recommend? Another forum for discussing and getting to know authors?

For me, like Emily, I mostly got to know people here in the forums. I only talk to a couple regularly, but I've had others reach out privately and ask if I could look over their story or parts of a story. Simple, polite, direct works pretty well if your goal is to find someone who you'd want to beta read for you. Maybe it's someone whose work you respect, or who shares similar interests, or is just a good writer/reviewer. A politely worded DM can go a long way for some people, though I'd probably recommend getting to know someone first, or at least asking if you can DM them, just to be polite.

This is what I did with Anthrodisiac.
I was writing a nonhuman story, which is most of Anthro’s wheelhouse, and asked for feedback. It helps that my story was short, but their advice was excellent and made the story better.

This ☝️☝️☝️☝️

Everyone I’ve alphaed or betaed has been someone I knew at least a little and most of them were people whose work I knew and respected.

I think there is a bit of a beta-reading grape vine. And most people credit their alphas and betas and so people who like author X might think, “If Y betaed for X, maybe I’ll try Y’s stories.”

It’s amazing the connections you can make by being positive, friendly, and trying to help out. I probably spend at least 50% of my ‘forum’ time talking to peopele (1-1 or in groups) over PMs.

I've only got one real major WIP. 34K words in, about 65-70% done for the Bi Challenge.

And then... there are the stories I try not to think about as stories:
  • One 6K letter, done, that I'm sitting on because it has already changed its point and perspective 3 times and I don't know if it wants to change again the next time I read it. I'm not yet ready to publish it, either. I need to write something else before to make sure the two don't overlap because they shouldn't.
  • One super short story epilogue (think 750-1500 words) that my beta slapped some sense into me about and I need to rethink from the ground up, and very very soon if I want to meet an arbitrary deadline I set for myself.
  • One shit-post I will never post... or so I say.
  • One idea that started in a writing prompt this week and that I may or may not develop into a short Non Erotic story in December.
  • One massive, massive story that I am not actively writing but that lives in 3 hours and 20 minutes, so far, of voice recordings. I'm just dumping thoughts there because I can not let myself write it yet. It needs more research to avoid a lot of pitfalls. 2027, hopefully.
  • One stopped story from like the mid-2010s. It's about 20K words in, but I never was able to finish it because of several reasons. I don't know if I ever will. I think that counts as Work In Stalled State, though, not Progress.
And the ideas doc grows bigger, but there are 2 concrete plans that I will only let myself think about once the Bi story is done.

But really, it's just the one WIP.
