MTV to exploit Appalachia?

I see that they mention "Jackass". Johnny Knoxville has already done a version of this, can't remember what it was called.

America has a love-hate relationship with its ower-class hillbilly citizens. On one hand, they seem a repository of all that is retrograde and benighted. On the other hand, they're our last bad-ass white boys. See "every WOody Harrelson role".

Johnny produced a documentary on the White family of Boone County, WV. The Whites were previously filmed for a 2-part documentary for PBS in the 90s.

If I ever go back to college, I'd like to major in Appalachian studies. The music, the culture, the dialects...really fascinating.

I don't think MTV's series will serve the region any better than Knoxville's film.

"Deliverance" set back tourism in the backwoods 20 years...and yes there is such a thing as bad publicity.

Hillbillies are funny. Except the Whites. They're just nasty. I got about halfway through that doc and turned it off.

What about Eli winning two superbowls?
He was the kid with the banjo, wasn't he?

Poor Eli. Wins a SB before his brother, wins more than his brother, still compared unfavorably to his brother. I used to dislike him because of his draft day tantrum but over time I've come to really feel sorry for the guy.

I couldn't look away. Sincerely. The first 2 PBS documentaries are cult legend around here, and I honestly loved the elements of Appalachian music and dance that they somewhat highlighted. But Knoxville's documentary was pure insanity. The kind that makes you feel good about your own family.

Why not? MTV has exploited just about everybody else. I think they broke ground with "Real World" season 1. After that everybody dog piled on to get their five minutes of fame. You could really open things up with a "16 & Pregnant" thread!

Agreed. Leave it to MTV.

Well that was just mean.

people perceive wv by the media dumbshit. they go around and find the worst people to show off. it all started with the comics in newspapers long ago.
its like people stereotyping how gays act, or city people, etc.. if you don't live here, you can't make a comment. it's then just a generalized statement.

anyway, the accents and culture changes depending on where you are at. people in northern wv sound different than southern areas, and east compared to the west. its very diverse.

I draw the line at the Nuge. Sorry!

I really, really do love bluegrass music. One of my passions...

many people do not know about the really old bluegrass. modern bluegrass hit with the invention of the radio. then flatt and scruggs ruined it. too much focus on the banjo. banjoes give me a headache.

Right now every possible niche group in the entire socioeconomic structure is being closely examined for material.

Look for Wal-Martians, a series about what really happens in the break rooms and stock rooms of your favorite retailer. Since this show is being produced with the cooperation of Wal-mart corporate headquarters, expect liberal use of security camera footage. The beauty of this program is all performers are on the clock and have consented to appear on camera, just by taking the job. The production costs are lower than the weather radar channel, so expect to see Wal-Martians on several times a day.

Yeah. He's a republican.

I got it:

Ted Nugent - Stranglehold

Can you imagine? I'm ashamed to say that I worked for Wal Mart years ago.

I bet you never read the very small print on your job application. You could be put in the show and not know it. Did you know all the electric eye flush valves they installed on all the toilets are actually cameras intended to find out who are all the time wasters on the staff?
