Why is it that, those people who feel the need to leave abusive comments or send nasty messages, always remain anonomous??? It would be nice to read some of their work and leave a constructive criticism for them too...
Grrrrr! :(

People can be abusive in cyberspace because no one knows who they are. Add to that the chance to not even leave a username and multiply the rudeness by a hundred.

There is a Thread in this Forum for those comments. Some of them are pretty funny actually.

To answer your question, as near as I have been able to figure out there are three kinds of people who make Anon responses:

1) Those trolls who don't actually bother to read the story but simply make nasty remarks to everyone for their own jollies.

2) Those readers to read your story expecting something and discover half way through it's not what they expected, then take up upon themselves to dis your story for their own inadiquacies.

3) Those readers who want only to pick your story apart in to make their own trashy efforts seem better in their own eyes.

Don't worry about it. We all get them.

Probably because of that attitude.

Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous are over 90% of your readership. Of those, only the smallest of fractions may leave abusive comments. Deal.

Too true

Isn't it annoying though!!

If I read a story and for whatever reason don't like it; I move on without trashing it. I wouldn't ever leave a non-constructive spew of verbal vomit for the author - and remain anonomous. There seem to be people out there who exist only to troll other people's work for fun. Hey ho.

That is it.

I'm more annoyed with those who ask me questions via anonymous feedback email. How exactly am I supposed to answer?

There are nice people who sign themselves Anonymous

From time to time, I have had, as I'm sure others of you have had, people signing themselves as Anonymous who have given good Scores - and more importantly have left favorable comments. Occasionally, they will even leave a first name. Often times, I have wished they would have left a way to contact them. They certainly deserve our heartfelt thanks. Well, such is the life of us Writers, eh?

Hang on! What if 4) The thing was bollocks? I mean, some of the stuff on here is, you know. One of mine is pretty lousy, for instance. Anyone can write a clunker. The one I'm thinking of really does deserve to be panned.

I got ego to burn, though, ego to rent out, ego to give to the poor. Nothing they say can, consequently, make me lose self-esteem. But they can't know that. What if I were a marshmallow? What if one bad word about one of my stories were all I needed to snap my fragile hold on sanity? They would then have to listen to me whinge and subsequently fear my madman's nihilistic revenge. (Assuming, you know, that a thumbs down review on my work would leave me nothing more in the world to lose.)

They avoid all that by discreetly concealing their identity from me when they tell me the story is a dud. The site makes this easy for them. Then, when I whine and blubber about it, or list endless excuses, they will be in another room out of earshot; and, when I go homicidal, they will be safely out of the crosshairs.

Dude... can I like, borrow your ego, and you, for, oh... the next five years?

I am a guilty anonymous comment submitter and just finished writing an essay on this very subject - anonymous comments. Would any of you care to proof it for me before I submit for posting under Review and Essays?

Nothin to it. I'm around....

I just figured out I'm okay. You could do that. You're a little angry, now, once in a while, and you might not have a perfect record-- who does? For one thing, just forgive yourself!

Forgiveness is funny stuff. It's easiest when you are least involved. A total stranger appears, for instance, balling up his hands, tearing his garments, whatever it is, saying,"God! I've hit absolute bottom! I'm sooo sorry!"

It's easy to tell him, "It's all right, buddy-- we all make mistakes," but if the guilty party is closer to you, if he did something truly stupid which hurt a friend, it's harder to let him up. But holding a grudge is such hard work! And cherishing resentment warps your mental health, too. Forgive him!

Hardest of all is forgiving yourself, because they don't even know the whole story about you. Only you know, in the end, the extent of your perfidy. But you have to forgive yourself, for your own sake. Because you're okay, just human. It's a good first step to a robust ego. Do what it takes to get there. Set yourself an atonement, like the priests do. But get into the clear with yourself.

Grrrrr! :(

You are obviously new. Welcome. ;) They leave them because that's their take on your story. Most anons don't write - they read. Should you expect a different criticism on your publically posted story in the specific genre of your choice? What do you expect from feedback or a PC? Cudos?

Just a simple ask.

Thanks...

for the welcome :D Yep i'm a newbie.

I don't mind feedback or criticism - it's a sign that somebody has read it - the offensive stuff goes with the territory I guess. :)

I used to do Anonymous under certain circumstances. I had a rule about when I did it, but it eludes me now. I do remember that if I were going to be critical, I would instead send a feedback with a return address, so that my Anon comments were always positive. What sort of 'proof'? If it's grammar and dangling modifiers, run-ons and misused words, I can do that. If it's a larger task, like real editing, I have to beg off.

Really just a read. I think I have the grammar, puntuation and general writing mechanics down. Looking someone to tell me if I am clear in what I am saying. If you are interested I will send it to you via pm. And thanks.
