Mr. Bach Rocks!

Iinspired by one of my classes, I've taken out my Johann Sebastian Bach - and not one of the more popular pieces that he's done.

It's a two CD set with one CD being "The Art of Fugue" and the other being "A Musical Offering".

I've listened to it non-stop since I've been home...almost three hours now. It amazes me how a man could write with such exacting precision, in so many voices, yet do so with such timless elegance. Bach was a genius and I think it's a shame that generations are growing up without knowing about this formidable musical talent.

With over 1000 works and over 20 children, J. S. Bach was a formidable creative force.

For more of his best, check out the Brandenberg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Suites for Solo Cello, the Partitas for Solo Violin, The Well-Tempered Clavier I & II, The Magnificat in D, The Mass in B Minor, and The Passion of St. Matthew.

Ahhhh Music!

phrodeau's list has many of my favorites. It's astounding that all that poured out his head with little else to listen to. He never traveled and there were few masters to hear anyway. He just made it all up.

Mendelsohn discovered much of this after it had fallen into obscurity. It actually could have been lost. Of course Mendelsohn wrote pieces when he was 10-12 that are still performed today.

Other favs, quartets and symphonies by Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelsohn... Incredible music that many people would absolutely love if they only heard it.

I am a amateur violinist and SO plays viola. We have played in a few orchestras and quartets, not to mention playing duets together. (isn't that just the cutest?)

I'll bet phrodeau has studied some. What do you and other people play? Did you let it slide, or do you still play?
