I want one!!!! For months, I've been dying for an ipod, but I've waited so long that there are now tons of other options on the market. I want quality, reliability, etc. I need at least 1 gig (but prefer 2 or more), and I'd really love to be able to use it in the car somehow or other.
Suggestions? Is an ipod still the best way to go?

I got a 1 gig SanDisk MP3 player from Amazon this Christmas. No complaints.

I can personally vouch for the iPod Nano being very very shiny.

:) Thanks. ;)

Imp- hard to tell from Amazon, but it looks like that player can be used with an FM transmitter, so sorta car adaptable.

You're right! Added that little gizmo to my WishList. :D

iPods are incredibly well-marketed, but if what you want is something to play music and that is it, there are more-than-adequate players you can get for much less cost.

I suspected as much, but since there are so many on the market, I've no clue what's good and what's crap. Any suggestions?

Depends on where you want to spend your $. Good sound? I'd go for iaudio or iriver (shamelessly piggybacking on the ipod brand, but better quality). Cool looks? That's still ipod's turf, although the new Sonys are drool worthy too.

And this odd one looks kinda snazzy, but i have no idea how good it is:

I don't care what it looks like at all; it's more the function aspect of it that I want. I have a shitload of music I want to be able to listen to away from my puter. I'll check into iaudio and iriver.

Thanks Imp. :rose:

I posted a link on your hard drive thread about my MP3 player. It's a 1 gig, and like Imp, I have no complaints about mine. Keeps me sane on long haul flights. Look around, there are some bargains out there.

Good luck.

I was just at my local computer store and they have a car adaptor MP3 player, you plug it into your cigarette lighter and set it to a frequency then tune your radio into that frequency. However, it uses flash drives, so it's not out of car compatible, unless you find an MP3 player that uses flash/jump drives.

Creative Zen.

'nuff said.
I always thought that was two Zen Masters putting their heads together and coming up with a little insight.

I admit to being an Apple zombie. But there is a cheap ipod if you don't care if you have a screen or not:

Shuffle

$99 (U.S.). I have one of these. Light, inexpensive, perfect if all you want is to push "play" and listen to music--going forward, backward, or shuffling randomly through playlists.

If you want more than that, to be able to scroll through songs/playlists and pick out what you want, then I recommend the nano:

nano

Which is only $50 more.

The iPod nano design is one of the BEST on the market. They fit in your hand and your thumb rests naturally on that wheel...that wheel which can speed you through your songs and options magically. Far faster and better than so many other very cumbersome if cheaper mp3 players. The battery life is good, the size and weight light and slim enough to wear around your neck, slip into pocket or a small purse.

The screen is STUNNING. The little extras wonderful, including calendars, contacts, even a little stopwatch if you're into that at the gym.

iTunes is a fantastic program. Easy to use and flexable. The market for buying on-line music and books off iTunes (and the iPod is made to work really well with books-on-tape, so you can start right up where you left off on a chapter) is huge and getting huger, so you have a wide range with that. AND because it is such a best seller, there are tons of inexpensive extras to go with your iPod, from adapters allowing you to play it over your car radio to items to lengthen battery life (already pretty darn good), to holders.

Companies even make nifty things like traveling "steros" like this:

Mobile Speakers

You may not want any such extras now--but if you ever do, there are lots avalible, plenty of choices. Again, unlike other mp3 players.

Finally, the iPod has been around and through the wringer. They know what they're doing with this mp3 player. It holds up, does well and there are plenty of stores to take it to if you run into trouble, as well as on-line discussion areas.

iPods are a beautiful design, a reliable product, use a fantastic and reliable and easy program for your music, and hold their value if you decide to sell them. I think they're well worth paying out a little extra for what is, overall, a very well made product.

*raises hand* Have one, love it. About the price of a Shuffle but much more features, holds more songs, etc.
Wow. There's lots and lots of Creative Zen choices at Amazon. Why, oh why, can't this be simple?!?
