Movies!

I love it when other people have stress movies!

Mine is Billy Elliott. :)

(Though Almost Famous, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Lost in Translation will do in a pinch.)

ETA: Re-reading this thread got that damn song stuck in my head again. Thanks a lot for bumping, PayDay.

Stress movies!

When I'm down, I watch all of my favorite movies. You've seen a lot of them with my avatars. Shawshank redemption, Matrix, Inception, The Crow, Firefly, and others.

Totoro!! I love all those Studio Ghibli films, but for some reason I find watching My Neighbor, Totoro incredibly relaxing when I'm stressed out. Maybe because it takes you back to time when your problems were as big as chasing small fluffy things through the undergrowth.

I love that first scene with Totoro, and then the one in the rain next to the bus-stop when he discovers UMBRELLAS :)

Oh, and you don't need to wait for Christmas to have your own Totoro: http://cheekandstitch.com/diy-totoro-plush-tutorial/

Totoro is indeed a sweet, relaxing movie, which is why I like it.

I found Totoro crochet patterns and have made several, including a Frankenstein's Totoro requested by my son. I made that one out of different types of yarn, and it still looks pretty cute.

Stress movies... hmmm... I've never thought of them that way, but I would probably go to Dark City, The Crow, Casablanca, Serenity and maybe Jaws.

I've heard good things about Princess Mononoke ages ago, but somehow it kept being pushed down the list. You guys spurred me to action so now I finally saw it.

I had no idea at the time, but clearly this movie must have been the main inspiration behind Cameron's Avatar. Amazing how much better the story works without such improvements as Avatar's militant moral simplicity and staggering visual kitsch.

Thanks for the inspiration, PennLady. I might check out a few more Studio Ghibli titles. I'm practically virginal as far as the whole Japanese thing goes.

Those Japs cleanup bigtime with the Oscars. If Clint Eastwood didnt hire a few Jap actors occasionally theyd starve.

You're welcome! :) I can't tell you how much I really love these movies. I'm a big animation fan. If you can, I'd say see "Spirited Away." It's also by Miyazaki and is just marvelous in the range of fantasy creatures he drew. Ponyo is very sweet, and I like it, but it doesn't strike the same chord that, say, "My Neighbor Totoro" does. I think when I get back to my place this week, I will watch Princess Mononoke,

One fun note on that was that my son decided to watch it in Japanese with no subtitles. That, he said, is how it would be shown in Japan. ;) I don't think he lasted the whole movie, and he'd seen it before in English with subtitles and all, but I thought that was pretty adventurous of him.

Husband is the animation fan in casa Verdad, though he’s new to the Japanese stuff as well. I tune in and out depending on the mood.

We’ll start where you suggest if possible, then see how it goes. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few more before we finally drag our butts to vacation proper. Thank you again. :)

My favorite non-anime animated movie is probably "Nightmare before Christmas." I love that stop-motion stuff -- Chicken Run, The Corpse Bride, Coraline, Wallace & Gromit. etc. For cartoon animation, again non-Japanese, "The Iron Giant" was a great movie.

I don't see it.

Of course, there are many movies that you can see and read them as the 'main inspiration' for Avatar, because Avatar is a very simple recycled movie plot that has been used many times.

Lets see... Dances with wolves, Pocahantas, Atlantis; The lost empire, Princess Mononoke, Ferngully, The last Samuri, etc.

Mononoke did it better than all of them. Ashitaka wasn't a sanctimonious holier-than-thou prick.

I like those too. Haven't seen The Iron Giant, though. Saw it from the corner of my eye but I must have been wrapped up in something else.

Seemed obvious enough to me. Sure, you could say a well-worn plot doesn’t take its inspiration from any source in particular or you could offer a whole list of sources which may or may not have inspired the plot or a particular motif. I think we even did that at the time. But Princess Mononoke is the closest fit I’ve seen. I’m not curious enough to investigate whether Cameron said anything about it anywhere, though, so let that stay simply my opinion.

IRON GIANT!!!!

:D :D :D

It did an excellent job, but (see below)

Ok, here the deal with the Japanese: They do the extremes to perfection. So while Ghibli exists, there is also the opposite.

If Mononoke is one side, family oriented and cushioned, there is the Blue Gender series on the other. 26 episodes and 750 minutes of OAV goodness with violence, apocalypse, nudity, space stations, immorality, morality, evil good and good evil, giant robot suits, love, romance, drama; plus it only works in subtitles.

I honestly believe it to be the best version, in Japanese, of the man out of place saving the day and the oppressed people story. It's only like $5 bucks for the box set these days.

Do not underestimate Japanese serials. Even played over crap has value. For instance, DBZ: Lord Slug. It has the best dubbed soundtrack ever in an Anime plus killer visuals and a great stand alone story.

Word. I also would like to add: BTILC, Galaxy Quest, Other People's Money, Volunteers, Star Trek: Generations, and Clue.

:D That's how I roll. I also take requests.

'This Is Spinal Tap' (only movie on IMDB that isn't rated out of 10).

And if you like animation, 'Allegro Non Troppo' is worth a look. Bit like an Italian version of 'Fantasia', although some of the content is not for children.

Have to agree that Galaxy Quest is one of my favorites. Also an old movie, from a Neil Simon play called "Murder by Death." Goofy but great cast - Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Nancy Walker, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Peter Sellers, and Truman Capote.

Why thank you too, Pay Day. Noted and archived for future reference. I'm getting an honest to god education here. Or a new vice, I'm not sure, but that's cool too. :D

PennLady: saw Totoro. Awww. :cathappy:

An older anime that I really like is "Vampire Hunter D." I think there may be more to it, like sequels or something, but I'm not sure.

LOL Isn't Totoro great? Here's a link to the torotos I've made. Every time my daughter sees yarn, she grabs it and says, Mommy can you make me a totoro wif dis?

You're a dab hand at crafts! Too cute for words. :D

It's an OK vice to have these days, as movie prices are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down from fifteen years ago when I got into Anime.

Used to have to pay $30 bucks for 2 episodes of a series on VHS, and that was either Dubbed or Jap Mono, seldom both.

Thank goodness for DVD and multiple soundtracks.

Vampire Hunter D is a good one, even if the action is a bit slow. I especially like the hand rescuing D by eating dirt.

The movie version of D is actually stand alone, the OAV serial came out later on, after the movie, and most of it sucks, more like Hentai pon than a story.

The other movies in the series fall short of the original, but the action gets better.

I do believe there is a Manga that the movie is based off of, but no promises.

That's a gem. The other fun spoof is The Black Bird, a takeoff on The Maltese Falcon. Some great scenes in that one.

MOVIES YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH:

Sueño - Quite literally one of the sexiest movies I've ever seen. Full of music, random dance sequences, and the worst Duran Duran cover in history. 85% is in English, and it only borders on musical theater, so don't worry.

Dramas: (Both based on graphic novels, and quite graphic):

A History of Violence - Has one of the hottest sex scenes ever.

Road to Perdition - Period piece with a great cast.

Comedies:

Rat Race
Mel Brooks's High Anxiety
Clockwise

I'll have to think about this, but in the meantime . . .

is it sad that the bolded bit makess me really, really want to see it? :D
