Movies!

Silent Hill is a good movie, but the ending is a bit weird. Now I sure would like to discuss this with someone that has actually watched the movie so anyone want to PM me about it??

Like I said earlier my money is going for others things. No one has mentioned V for Vandetta. Saw is a good movie, alot of brutallity from my point of view though.

One movie a friend said was good was Hard Candy, the one about the girl that lures a pedophile to her?? She said its a great mind fuck type movie.

I don't spend much on movies usually. Most books and movies I get free from the library or they are borrowed from buds of mine. I love sharing my things with others too.

At the beach this year we had free DVD's but only one at a time. So we saw about one movie a day at lunch time in the "bad sun" part of the day. One of those was V for Vandetta. We liked it a lot. If that's brutality, I guess it's not a problem for me. Color me surprised though because usually I'd say it would be.

Hard Candy sounds like something that could be fun or horrible. I'm not sure which. Have you seen it? I like dark humor like Jaw Breaker or Election but dislike creepy stuff like Blue Velvet or Taxi Driver.

That would be a bonus to me!

Leon is about a hitman who develops a relationship with a very young girl. It sounds taboo but it isn't. Its directed by luc besson (who did fifth element) and has gary oldman and jean reno in it. It is probably one of my favourite movies.

I have loads of feel good movies. American Beauty always used to be one but its been a while since ive watched it. Amelie is one of the most beautiful movies I have seen.
Then I have the guilty pleasure feel good movies too like sister act which always make me smile :)

Leon sounds interesting. I have a fondness for hit men and young girls. I sort of liked Fifth Element which was not reviewed well at all!

American Beauty was okay to me but not great at all.

Amelie was a fun movie. I enjoyed it. So did my girl. It's quirky.

Sister Act was great fun. I enjoy Whoopie G. She simply makes me smile in most of her movies.

Oh and I remembered too that we went to see Night At The Museum or something like that. Two of the tickets were free. It was fun for the kids and me!

I see. I've never tried that one.

I was turned off of going to this movie for two reasons. One it's about football, blech. For another it makes some nice looking men look like shit IMO. I'm glad to know it's good though. I might pick it up at the library now.

Even tho We Are Marshall is ostensibly a football movie, it is more about the transendence of a university and a community over tragedy. It really is an awesome story of human preservence over the worst kind of tragedy. and it si completely a true story.

the ending was definaely a WTF?!?!

Somehow I didn't get it.

Speaking of Amelie I have to say not only was impressed with the movie, I found myself laughing in a manner that I can only describe as mad towards the end. It left me in a state of pleasant bemusement one which lasted most of the next day. A very good film.

American beauty was heavy handed in many ways though I personally enjoyed it greatly almost inspite of itself. It made me think, in ways both predictable and tired and in a few ways which were novel. This is what causes me to re-watch it, occasionally.

For those with a taste for more...impassioned and bloody movies I would suggest High Tension, a European import that is so good I had difficulty sitting through it without pausing to discuss it with my contemporaries. Even if one has no stomach for the violent parts it is worth seeing for the psychology, alone.

my thoughts were that she was in a different dimension of some sort?? that's all i could get out of it, though i'm probably wrong. it was definantly a very strange ending..i was all ready for her to go home to her husband and live happily ever after with their adopted daughter and such..*shrugs* pretty good movie all and all though....

My daughter and I liked Clerks 2 and Clerks but my husband and son pretty much hated them.

I've not seen any Saw movies. I hear they are scary. If one of my three closest loved ones wanted to see them I would. The same goes for Silent Hill.

Four Brothers was just okay for me. I hate it when the kill the ONE guy in the movie I care about.

I love movies too!

I like feel good movies, particularly when I feel bad. I got a bunch of DVD's at the library today because I do feel like shit. We'll see if I actually get to watch any of them though.

What is Leon about?

Fury :rose:

ohhh fury we are Marshall is about football but honestly, i DO NOT like football at all, and i LOVED that movie! the reason they make them 'look like shit' is because it's set in the 70's....i highly recommend seeing it but having tissue handy because it is definantly a tear jerker, and i love true stories and watchign a community bond together to overcome something so tragic.

the saw movies are scary, but more so bloody and violent.

clerks and clerks 2..omg i LOVE those two movies. i can understand how if you're not into the quarky funny stuff that someone could hate them..but i loved them and will watch them again and again....

four brothers...yea they did kill off the one boy and i was disappointed with that also

On which movie?

I don't tend to like a WTF ending. Endings are one area that most movies fail IMO.

*smiles and nods*

Looks like we think alike on most of these, at least the ones we have both seen.

So what movie is it that the ending didn't make sense, you guys are discussing above?

Last night the kids wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Man's Chest. Now the last one of these put me to sleep and therefore IMO should have been shorter. I tend to love Johnny Depp but they make him and just about everyone in this movie look dirty and nasty. WTF???

When Orlando Bloom looks better than Johnny who also looks very gay, well that's simply scary. I don't think of JP as gay. I don't like that portrayal at all. Not that I have anything against being gay it just made little sense to me. However there are amusing parts to the film if you can get pass all the rotten teeth and slime. Ugh. I can believe what a big hit these movies are. Or that little kids watch them.

Enjoyed Rocky Balboa, Sly did a good job.

Apocalypto was wierd, had a hard time keeping up with the subtitles, and is VERY violent.

Did not enjoy Dreamgirls, was just a movie, nothing special, but then musicals do nothing for me anyway.

Loved the Queen, Helen Mirren is something else.

I saw Hard Candy in December and I would recommend it highly . I found the entire movie captivating in a most disturbing manner . I had asked a friend about it and he told me not to watch it , which in turn meant it was a high priority to view . Not so much in defiance but curiosity . His valor seemed disproportionate for movie commentary.

There are several facets that make the movie compelling viewing . Out of respect for those that have not seen it I will not comment too much more than to say the acting by Ellen Page is outstanding as 14 year old Hayley and that Leeroy's take that it falls within a realm of mind f--k is quite accurate.

O.k. I've been reading through the list of movies on here and have to make a small correction. The movie that keeps getting called "Leon" is actually titled The Professional. The main character in the movie is a hitman names Leon who forms a sort of father/daughter relationship with a young girl (played by a young Natalie Portman) after her family is killed by a DEA agent.

It's a very good movie.

I think I got it but of course can't talk about it on the thread lest we ruin it for others. SO PM??

I love the randomness of Netflix. I know you can set your queue in any order you want but I always forget. I just add stuff to the queue as I think of it. So what do I have to watch this weekend? Dodgeball and Hotel Rwanda. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum! LOL.

That's funny!

I actually enjoyed both of those films too!

Today I watched The Grudge the American version with my daughter, which made more sense to me and scared me more, than the Japanese version. I still didn't like it much. Why they had to make cat sounds and disturb the sweet cat in my lap I will never understand.

I also watched Little Man with my son. The previews of this film had given me the willies. It wasn't a film I wanted to see at all. In the end though it did make me laugh.

Oh, the cat thing reminds me, I hate to see innocent animals hurt or the suggestion of hurting them in films. Kill all the stupid humans you want but leave the dear animals out of it. So I was pissed when that poor dog in the pirate movie was left on an island of hungry natives and was being chased by them. *grr* I liked the dog far better and he also seemed far smarter than any of the humans.

Sir bought The Warriors, I borrowed a vsh copy of 9.5 weeks and The Pet too.

The Warriors rock just a good gang movie and it makes me think of the Spartans of antiquity too. I still have to watch 9.5 weeks again but that is tomorrow night after the club meeting.

Now I know everyone said The Pet sucks and I would agree mostly, but I think there were a few redeeming moments too. I think in part the ending is the best part.

I've not seen any of those. Be sure to keep letting us know how the movies are. What was Warriors rated? I don't think I've heard of it at all.

Its R but the movies is from 1979 to Fury so just hit Best Buy its 10 bucks there for the DVD and its worth it too.

Just saw Pan's Labyrinth last night. I enjoyed it muchly. It's a hard hitting one, especially one for a Spanish Gothic film.

Saw "Notes on a Scandal" yesterday, and really liked it... if you've ever wanted to see Judi Dench play a lesbian sociopath and Cate Blanchett play a convicted pedophile, this is your movie!

It's a very good movie.

The Professional rocked. But that is the title used in it's US release. In the UK it was Leon, and other parts of the world got it as The Cleaner. Jean Reno, as Leon, was great!

As for Silent Hill Dark, brooding, moody. The ending wasn't a WTF if you were paying attention... An "alternate dimension"? *chuckles* That's one way of putting it...

Okay, who saw the American version of The Ring? And please, please, PLEASE, tell me I am not the only person who saw this piece of trash, cliche' filled, sorry excuse of a film and predicted it scene for scene from the opening to the ending credits! ! ! ! I kid you not, I watched it with janey (she's a horror fan and had watched it several times, thought she was giving me a treat *rolls his eyes*), I knew nothing of the original movie or this one, and started telling jane what the next scene would be as each scene wound up... Including the "surprise ending". GAG.

The only thing I think I dislike in a movie more than predictability is insulting the intelligence of the audience and The Ring rates right down at the bottom with Napoleon Dynamite and anything with Pauly Shore in it.

I saw Eragon at the $1.50 theater this afternoon... glad I didn't waste $8.00 for it, but was mildly entertained for the 1:39 playing time. Not epic fantasy like LOTR, and they played with the story details a bit from the novel, but the flavor was spot on for juvenile fantasy. Not a bad flick if you like swords and sorcery tales.

Monday I rewatched Starship Troopers again, does that count?? The money just isn't there to buy new movies or even previous viewed ones.
If you take Starship Troopers as a stand alone movie, it's not to bad. As an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic novel, it sucked. It got the tone right but dayum, in today's world of CGI and special effects, where was the Power Armor? ? ? Mobile infantry was MOBILE infantry because of the jump suits... "On the bounce, trooper!"

A much better adaptation of the novel is the animated TV series Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. 40 episodes were originally planned, 37 were done, and the series aired in 1999 - 2000. Available on DVD from Sony, you can sometimes find it at your local video stores.

Ok you big meany you just spoiled the movie for others, but answer me this when Chris was in the school and his wife was too, where was she at?? She was I think calling out to the kid, but he could somehow hear her across the fabric of reality. Or was it when she entered the town, the evil part of her kid still in kid form pulled her into that different reality?? How is it that the cop didn't know all the people were still living in the church either??

I go with what you say about the ending though, reminds me of that show Tales from the Darkside. I would show a picture of the world and the darkside had all the color leeched out so it was just gray.

I have been wanting to watch that for some time now...
I watch a lot of Grays anatomy because of my wife but the last good movie I watched was The Illusionist with Edward Norton.

Anyone see The Covenant?? Its the movie about a group of boys that are the reincarnated selves of warlocks from the 15th century. Looks interesting.

How many people are going to watch Ghost Rider when it comes out in less then 2 weeks?? I would watch it on Friday but going to hit the movies on Saturday
.
