I refused to see American Pie in the theaters because it seemed like another lameass empty-headed teen comedy. Was I surprised when I caught it on cable and L'd my F'in A straight Off. I just saw American Pie 2, and it too was pretty funny. Neither are top 10 funny, but definitely waay better than I expected.

What movies did you think would suck, but didn't?

Shallow Hal. Not a masterpiece, but a good enough way to pass an hour and a half last week on the plane home.

Resident Evil and Blade II

I was not sure they could continue Blade as well as the 1st movie. But the action scenes more than made up for any lack of plot substance.

As for RE ..... I almost pissed my pants.

I just saw the new Dennis Quaid movie, "The Rookie" today. I thought it would be kinda lame, but it was well worth the time. A nice feel good movie.

Water: The essence of moisture.

Zoolander.

And to think! There is more to life than being good looking and being popular! :D

Defintely Blade 2

Didn't think that they would make another Blade movie. Thought the first one was a fluke. The second pleasantly surprised me. Alot.

Well... I didn't exactly expect it to SUCK, but my expectations weren't that high, for: Babe, Pig In The City. That movie absolutely blew me away. The visual style was so inventive, and much DARKER than I had anticipated (which is almost always a good thing).

Another, more recent example: I went into I Am Sam expecting a treacly-cloying movie that would bash me over the head with its MESSAGE. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually pretty well done.

Snow Dogs

from the ads it looked like another stupid "talking dogs" movie but the lil one wanted to go and so we did

and it was really good, and very exciting and romantic too...and the "talking dogs" part came from a dream sequence that wasn't even a big part of the story

both of my thumbs up

I'd second Resident Evil. I'd heard it was really cheesy, and that seemed likely, but I'd give it 8 jumps out of 10. Plus Milla Jovovich naked at the end

I actually didn't like R.E. :(

Uhm. I think that "What Dreams May Come" was a big shocker for me. I really expected that to just be lame. I loved the idea behind it, though... and the effects. It was really a beautiful movie and story. One of the 6 DVDs I own. I don't buy many. :p

At first I thought Mallrats would suck, but now I'm a hugggggggge fan.

Btw, Laurel, American Pie 2 DID suck. Sorry.

i agree with Babe, Pig In The City...i didn't think it could live up to the original but i really liked it...the city was very cool (can you tell i see lots of kid flicks?)

i haven't seen I Am Sam yet...i find the thought of it a bit unnerving, but i'll make it

Fight Club... expected just blood and guts... loved the narration of poetic prose

Mothman Chronicles... in the theater was very visceral especially with a good sound system... forget about a plot though

The Flintstones... cleverly done anachronisms... and my sister worked on the movie and got to play with Elizabeth Taylor's tits when fitting her for one of her costumes

 pet:kiss:

I thought The Count Of Monte Cristo would suck. It got terrible reviews in the local papers, and I half-decided that I wouldn't see it. Then my mom said she wanted to have a girls' night out -- dinner and a movie. We scanned the listings for both neighborhood theaters, and the only movie that looked interesting to her was The Count Of Monte Cristo. I went to the theater prepared to sit through two and a half hours of dullness. But the movie just swept me up and thrilled me from beginning to end. The performances were excellent and the action was exciting. And the two and a half hours went by in an eyeblink. I ended up having a great time. The movie turned out to be better than the dinner!

Hey, if Laurel says it didn't suck, it didn't suck.
My favorite line of that movie: "I stuck a trumpet up your ass, how do you feel?"

As for R.E. Ohhhh..
I don't know if it's just because I'm repressed but Rain made my body do things it hasn't done in a long, long time.

Two

Jerry Maguire....I thought I was getting dragged to a chickflick. I was. But I liked it. Which makes me sad, very sad

High Fidelity...I really, really thought they'd wreck the book. But it was aight.

I agree with just pet - Fight Club was a movie I was bullied into watching on cable but thereafter watched again about ten times !

Still dont entirely understand it but thought it was brilliant !

That scene was crap. He was all surprised and stuff, but the trumpet went in so easily it was like he'd been fucked by a doneky for a few months.

.... And your point is?
Okay, how about when he was masterbating and superglued himself, wasn't that a bit funny?
