Well, then you're missing one.
Actually, two: Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which might have come out after 1999, so I'll shut up.

Anyway, as a young guy, all the movies that I ever liked came out during the 90's pretty much, so I have a list a hundred items long or so.

But I'll just post what I can think of off the top of my head.

All-Time Greatness:
American Beauty
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Conspiracy Theory
Fear of A Black Hat
Legend of Drunken Master (90's I think)
The Usual Suspects
Wayne's World
Fight Club
Life is Beautiful
Copycat
Phoenix
Pulp Fiction
Interview with the Vampire

Precedents:
The Matrix
Jurassic Park
Fight Club
Wayne's World (as the only good snl movie)
Boyz in the Hood
Love Jones
Cube
House on Haunted Hill (scariest movie ever)

I looked at some other people's posts (and yeah, I did see a few and had to add them to my list) and I wanted to make a few comments:

Really? I thought Boogie Nights was much better than Magnolia, which was really good as well.

I have no idea why Princess Mononoke gets any more attention then say, Akira, or Ninja Scroll. I think something about it says
great Anime for non-Anime fans, but I don't know what.

"Nowhere" was very cute. It started out good, but how can you say you still like it, having seen the ending?

What Dreams May Come sucked to me, because they tried to define these images of heaven and hell that didn't interfere or delve to much into any particular religion, and because the movie was too colorful, ultra-optimistic ("No one has ever come back!"), and... although I don't believe in heaven or hell, the movie was like Pocahontas to me, knowing the actual story of Pocahontas. I don't know if that's what everyone else thought or not.

I like both a lot. One reason I like Boogie Nights is that there are so many scenes that are clever homages to other great films (for example, the final scene is a direct takeoff of the final scene in Raging Bull).
Magnolia is wonderful too. The DVD is worth getting for the extra features, including Tom Cruise's infomercial, which is a scream.

1. Pulp Fiction I love that movie.

2. Natural Born Killers
3. Shawshank Redemption
4. Lord of the Rings
5. The Usual Suspects (I'm pretty sure that's in the 90's.)
6. Moulin Rouge
7. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
8. The Matrix

This is me editing:

Damn. Just realized we are no longer in the 90's so cancel #4, 6 and 7.

Replace with :
4. Fight Club
6. Terminator 2

and that's enuff.

I liked Boogie Nights at first because it was set in the San Fernando Valley in the 70s which is when and where I grew up. I'm very nostalgic for L.A. based movies and shows. Another reason I love Six Feet Under. :)

Is Magnolia about the porn industry too?

Movies of the 90s ...

... there were hardly any 'movies' in the 90s, the 1890s that is.

The Lumiere brothers filming of the Millennium Parade on the 8th of June 1896 really *must* be in the top 1 or 2. Eugene Dupont's living photograph exhibition was groundbreaking stuff. Perhaps one of the most useful 'films' of the [18]90s was Roentgen's film of his wife's hand while developing his discovery of x-rays. A right royal blockbuster that was.

:)

No. But trying to say what Magnolia is about is kinda difficult. It has about 5 different story lines or more. It's a very long movie, they should have taken out one of the story lines altogether. But, everyone gave great performances.

Why the comparisons to Boogie Nights?

Full Metal Jacket
Carlitos Way
Goodfellas
Quiz Show
Saving Private Ryan

Same director. Many of the same actors.

Ok, thanks.

I put it in my queue at Netflix. I love this site. $20 a month and as many dvds as I can watch.

hmmmm let me take a roll at it.

Forrest Gump (definetly my number 1)
and the rest in no particular order.....

Independance Day
Varsity Blues
American Pie
Austin Powers
Jurrasic Park
The Matrix
Fight Club
Die Hard: With a Vengence
True Lies
Little Nicky (I think that might be 2000)
