What are the better mouthpieces and what can be done to help with the taste of them?

Thanks for your help.

Okay so nobody knows diddly about mouthguards?

I've never played a sport where I needed one so I'm in the dark.

The very best ones are custom made by your dentist...I know my son football and thats what we did fits snug your teeth not some generic mold of what your teeth are supposed to look like, other than that I would suggest sports authority or any reptiable sporting goods store in your area. As for the taste sad to say but it comes with the terriotory and when you are in the heat of the game you aren't concentrating on that anyway. :nana:

It really doesnt matter. In the end they are all the same. As for molding them all you do is dip them in hot water for about 10 seconds and then put it in your mouth and bite down on it. The rubber is soft and then molds to the contour of your teeth. This is pretty much exactly what your dentist does anyway.

I thought this was about ball gags and the like...

I realized that after I posted it so I clarified.

My 5 yr old competes in martial arts and has to wear a mouthguard and absolutely hates it. I'm trying to find a good one so he can concentrate on his sparring and not the icky thing in his mouth.

Thanks for the help Tranquility

mmm plastic

Whatever governing body oversees the sport you are playing will likely have rules on protective equipment, i.e. the type and style of the mouthguard the players may use. Check with your teams coach or trainer. In my son's youth football league all the kids have to have the same style and color mouthguard (so the refs can SEE they're wearing them).
As far as the taste goes, you can try spraying it with one of those "minty breath" sprays (binaca, etc.) or even try a breath strip just before playing. I don't know how your going to totally get rid of the "rubbery" taste forever, though.

What sport you playing anyway?

Make sure that it doesn't go too far back in his mouth as it triggers the gag reflex.

Tranquility is right...the ones by a dentist are the best. But don't bother paying the money for them for a 5 yr old. His teeth are going to start falling out which will make the mouthguard no longer fit.

All you can do at this point is buy one of the cheap ones...and just make sure it is trimmed.

I am the mouthpiece for the underdog.

Less often, I am a mouthpiece for the majority.

I'm Tasty!

If you don't mind spending a little money, there is a brand called "Shock Doctor" .. you should be able to find them in most sporting goods stores.

There are three different "levels" of Shock Doctors.. The one rated 8 (or is it 9? I can't remember right now..) is the best quality one, but runs about 40 bucks here. Their top level mouthgard also has breathing channels making it much easier to breathe and talk with while wearing.. and while it probably doesn't taste like honey, I haven't had anyone complain of the taste.

It's the only brand that's carried at the sports store I work at.

Also a couple of other things..

Mia62 is right about the dentist fitted guard. It's a great idea but with a kid so young it's only going to (at best) last six months to a year before it doesn't fit anymore. With Shock Doctor gaurds, at least you can pick his size out.

For a 5 yr old? Soak it in something that will lend a little flavor. Mouthwash, Koolaid, fruit juice, whatever the kid might like.

Thanks for the help.

The sport is Tae Kwon Do. At competition yesterday I covered his mouthpiece in powdered sour candy and held off inserting it until right before he entered the competition floor. That worked but I hate putting that amount of sugar against his teeth repeatedly.

I looked at the Shock Doctors but the sports store I was at did not have one small enough for his mouth, I'll have to look around some more, maybe I can find a smaller one or just cut down a bigger one some.

I appreciate all the guidance I can get, I'm learning as I go as single moms do.
