Some people breathe through their mouths instead of nose. There's a name for it but I forget what it is. It has nothing at all to do with intelligence but since it makes the person look dumb then it's a common insult. I've used it often enough. Usually to describe those mouth breathing hicks in Ann Arbor.

"Mouth-breather" is roughly equivalent to "slack-jawed yokel." In all the old movies, there's the one dumb guy that's easily recognized as dumb because he's blank-faced and slack-jawed. I'm pretty sure that's where the insult comes from. As a long-time allergy sufferer, I don't use that one myself.
