I got the idea for this thread from my 'I Believe,' thread. I was once involved in AMWAY and if they're known for anything (apart from their cleaning products) they're known for their self motivating tapes and books.

I've listened to their tapes and read their books, and have to say that I was motivated for a short while at least. I found them to be somewhat like a drug, you needed regular doses to push yourself that one further step. I suppose that was the whole idea, but the fact is these motivational tapes and books really did work.

Anyway, I wondered if you'd care to share any motivational quotes that you have found both profound and true. Or simply quotes that you particularly find interesting and solemn.

If at first you don't succeed, try again.

If you fail the second time, just quit. No sense in being a damn fool about it.

;)

(I have many of these semi-inspirational quotes - just had to share!)

Here's a few that I like.

" No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come."
VICTOR HUGO

"Courage is not a lack of fear, but the ability to act while facing fear."
AUTHOR UNKNOWN

" Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win."
BERNADETTE DEVLIN

All battles are fought by scared men who would rather be someplace else. John Wayne, In Harms Way

Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children. We are more than the sum of our knowledge, we are the products of our imagination. - Ancient Proverb

"Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."
Will Rogers

My mantra:

"Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty"

Your kharma will appreciate it as will your soul.

"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups"

That's the motivational slogan over my desk.

Love Perdita's.

"The chief difference between genius and stupidity is that even genius has its limits." - Mark Twain

"I cannot but conclude that the bulk of your natives to be the most pernicious race of little odious vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth." - Jonathan Swift

Razors pain you;
The river is damp.
Acids stain you
And drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren't lawful,
Nooses give;
Gas tastes awful -
You might as well live.

-- Dorothy Parker

The sayings that usually have the most impact on me are based on common sense, and a good sense of ones self. Here's two that I really like:

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Sometimes, seeing the light is simply a matter of pulling your head out of your ass.

Here's a fave:

No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. —Samuel Beckett (Worstward Ho!)

VB, I love the Demotivations line as well. My favorite was (under a shot of an eagle): "Leaders are like eagles. We don't have any of those here, either."

I came up with a line myself once, it wasn't a motivational line but it was sweet, at least I think so.

"Loving you was easy, finding you was hard."

"I guess what it comes down to is, either get busy living or get busy dying." Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption.

Don't know how "motivational" they are, but Mark Twain rocked:

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.

I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him.

If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything.

I agree Belegon, Mark Twain was such a profound writer and man. Never realized this until I was much older and started collecting his books.

Few of my favourites:
No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings. -- William Blake

Love all, trust a few. Do wrong to none. -- William Shakespeare

Love gives itself; it is not bought. -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, Pain of love lasts a lifetime. -- Jean Pierre Claris De Florian

It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you're not. -- Andre Gide

A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and
can sing it back to
you when you have
forgotten the words.;
-- Unknown

Religion is for those who are afraid of hell. Spirituality is for those who have been there. Lakota saying

"Our thoughts become our words. Our words become our actions. Our actions become our habits. Our habits become our character."

I try to remind myself of this when someone pulls in front of me on the highway and I spew creative invective at him. Count to ten, think of England, write a sonnet ...

"You WILL obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears." ~ Ghengis Khan

From a friend of mine:

"Why push the envelope, when you can open it?"
