I'm out of my regular coffee. I usually drink the same brand I've been drinking since I was a kid. I get it in bean form, and have a little grinder. Also brew it in an old fashioned drip pot.

So today I woke up to find My roomate used the last I had to make some thins morning. I didn't feel like the treack all the way to pompna so I just ran down to the rite aide & got some maxwell house.

Ugh.

it got me to wondering, since coffee essentially comes from coffee beans, is that tase diference more in my head? Or do they do something to the beans that gives such a variety in taste?

I can taste a definite difference, I don't care for Arabica beans, I prefer colombian or hawiian.

My son made flavored coffee this morning, which I prefer in the afternoon, gotta have coffee coffee first thing, but I won't complain, cuz it made him happy.

I've heard it's the altitude that has the biggest impact on flavor.

I'm not picky, though. The Maxwell House stuff works for me. I had Jamaican Blue Mountain once -- and thought it tasted like 10W-30 motor oil.

Here's to taste ...

Guru twat!

I used to use Maxwell House beans, ground at the time of brewing; but I discovered Kalossi. I still want heartier stuff first thing in the morning, but Kalossi is so fine and mellow.

The differences in soil, climate, variety, roast and preparation all make an impact. They're different. Taste and try, best beloved. Just don't do it at Starbuck's. They roast it all so fuckin black at Starbuck's you can hardly tell what you have in the cup.

I think coffee is like anything else, it's what you're used to.

I'm with you, Abs, on the columbian and the flavored-coffee thing. I need dissolve-your-spoon-strong coffee first thing in the morning, and my dessert coffee later on.

I use 8'oclock brand beans. It's A&P's brand, has been around for years & years.

I've never liked flavored coffees. thaks for the input everyone :)

I don't have to drink a specific brand or type every morning, but I do prefer one in perticular. A local shop sells what they call Breakfast Blend, it has a nice smooth taste for first thing in the morning. I've had other Brakefast Blends that were similar. I also like Hawiian Kona but it's a little pricy.

But years of drinking swill off of coffee trucks on construction sites has probablly dulled my tastebuds a little. On a cold rainy morning, 10W-40 tastes good, as long as it's hot.

The more coffee-flavored the coffee the better. I'm talking Waffle House coffee or the old-coffee-machine-on-the-floor-of-my-department-coffee.

God, I need coffee. I don't even exist in the morning until I've had coffee and cigarettes and a shot of something (whiskey is nice, sometimes scotch).

Its all in the beans, baby. NEVER CHOOSE COLUMBIAN . . . if one must lower themselves to store bought brands, ensure the beans are arabic, even if it is a no name product, the arabic bean will have a much more advanced flavour than any columbian type. :D

While Lime has enlightened you, it is not often that brands will give you a choice in roast beyond light, regular and dark, with the exception of one brand here. For those back up moments, I always have a dark roast handy, although it's probably freezer burnt by now :D

Well, that's added a good few years to my image of you. As we MexChicks say, muy macho. P. ;)

Lime explained most of the differences, but I think the main difference you noted was the difference between whole-bean and pre-ground coffee blends.

Vacuum packed pre-ground coffee loses it's flavor faster than whole bean coffee does, but the first pot from a new can shouldn't be noticebly less flavorful than fresh-ground whole bean coffee.

That and the fact you chose Maxwell House instead of another brand. :p (Maxwell House is my last choice in a pre-ground coffee; I'll buy a no-name store brand before Maxwell House.)

I was paying with cahnge from the ashtray in the truck, Maxwell house won out over no name store brand by 15 cents with cupon :)

I have a flair for Kenyan coffee myself. I actually have no idea what brand and roast it is. My local store sells alot of imported shit, and I stumbled over it because they had too much of it once, needed to clear out some shelve space, and handed out free bags. Never looked back since.

There are two types of coffee plants: Arabica and Robusta. The robusta is cheaper but also has a thin, winey taste. Most leading brand American coffees use mainly robusta beans and throw is some more expensive beans to give the brew body and richness.

Most coffees, even gourmet coffees, are blends, just like scotch or Candian whiskey. They mix beans from all over to get a nonsistent taste and the recipe can vary from can to can although they do their best to keep the taste the same.

I use Stewart's but I think it's a local brand. It's extremely rich and mellow with no wine and very little acid. I don't know what kind of beans they use. I just know it 's great, and everyone who tries it switches to it.

The best thing that ever happened to coffee was the drip coffee-maker. Those who are old enough to remember coffee made in a percolator know what I mean. Ugh! Boiled coffee! At one time it was what everyone drank.

GREEN TEA!

(Coffee makes me waaaaaaaaaaay too hyper)

Coffee gives me severe indigestion. A big no-no.

My eldest son just got back from a holiday to Tunisia, brought me a bag of loose tea. On the outside it says The Vert, which to me is Green Tea. He assures me its supposed to be Mint Tea.

We'll see what it really is when I can pluck up the courage to try it. I am not a fan of green tea.

Sniff it.

Seriously, sniff it. Mint tea smells like, well, mint. Green tea smells nothing *like* mint. If its green tea, send it my way.

I'll pay for it :)

ahhh, coffee. Personally, I prefer a darker roast, even though I know it actually is less potent in caffeine.

If you want to get real on coffee, look for a local roaster and ignore starbucks, et al. If you have no local roaster, here is a San Diego company whose coffee I enjoy...
