I'm guessing not too many people here watch "Touched by an Angel" on TV, but last night's show was wonderful. Someone gave me a tip that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir would be on the Christmas episode so I taped it. The storyline had an 18 year old enlisting in the army after the Sept 11th attack. The tradition at his community church was for the newly enlisted person to be able to pick a hymn at their last church service before leaving home. He picked "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (which happens to be one of my favorites, too.) The man who normally would have put the town Christmas program together was killed in the WTC attack while he was in NYC making arrangements for his Christmas gift to the town- a visit by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The finale of the show was the choir filling the church while singing the hymn. Beautiful. This was also one of the few shows I have seen where the emphasis was on a normal, every day person who was killed in the WTC, and how that death affected his friends and neighbors. It was very well done.

Anyway, I looked up info online this morning and found the news release below. The choir will be featured again on 60 Minutes II on Wednesday night, if anyone is interested. And no, I'm not a Mormon. But we've all joked enough on this bb about their annoying visits to our homes so I thought it was time to say something positive about them, too. You have to admit, they have a hell of a choir! :)

Tabernacle Choir Receives National Media Attention
14 December 2001

CBS’ Touched by an Angel, 60 Minutes II and PBS Showcase Choir

SALT LAKE CITY — The Tabernacle Choir will appear on several national television programs this Christmas season including CBS’ Touched by an Angel, CBS’ 60 Minutes II and a PBS Christmas Eve special.

Performing one of its most popular songs, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," the Choir makes an appearance on CBS’ Touched by an Angel during a special Sunday evening episode. The Christmas special, "A Winter Carol," depicts a family dealing with the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attack. The episode airs 16 December at 7 p.m. MST and features music from the Choir’s new album, The Sound of Glory.

A few days later, 60 Minutes II will air a segment featuring interviews with members of the Choir at home and in their workplaces. The segment focuses on the volunteer nature of service in the Choir and includes a brief history of the Choir and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Produced by Alan Weisman, a 60 Minutes veteran, the piece also includes an interview with Angela Lansbury, guest artist for the Choir's recent annual Christmas concert. CBS’ 60 Minutes II will air Wednesday, 19 December, at 7 p.m. MST.

On Christmas Eve, the Utah Symphony and Mormon Tabernacle Choir join together for a new PBS holiday special, The Gift of Music, a 90-minute concert taped during a live performance under the direction of Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Utah Symphony. The concert features three soloists: Henriette Schellenberg (soprano), Robert Breault (tenor) and Robert Honeysucker (baritone). Salt Lake City's International Children's Choir also participates. In Utah, The Gift of Music will air at 8 p.m. MST on KUED, Channel 7. Check local listings in other areas.

For those who missed the Choir’s Christmas concert with the Orchestra at Temple Square and famed film, stage and TV star Angela Lansbury, KBYU, Channel 11, will rebroadcast the concert twice. The Joy of Christmas will air 22 December at 9 p.m. MST and again on 24 December at 8:30 p.m. MST.

The Choir received national attention early this year performing at the inauguration of President George W. Bush. The Choir has sung at the inaugurations of U.S. Presidents George Bush (1989), Ronald Reagan (1981), Richard Nixon (1969) and Lyndon Johnson (1965).

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has received various recognitions, including a Grammy Award for "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," an Emmy Award for the television program "Christmas Sampler," the Peabody Award for its CBS production "Let Freedom Ring," and the Freedom Foundation Award for its Fourth of July broadcast in 1980.

In February 2002, the Choir will be featured in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games, at four Cultural Olympiad concerts, and in the Church’s own cultural offering, Light of the World.

You are right, I don't watch "Touched By An Angel"

But I have always thought the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was awesome to listen to. Of course, they are noted for their Christmas music.

Thanks for letting us know:)

I grew up listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, as my mom has always been a big fan. Their music is beautiful - heavenly even. ;)

Tabernacle Choir

Cheyenne,
If you have never had the opportunity to here them you are really missing something. In Sept. I was in Salt Lake City at a convention and they did a special concert for our group on Sept. 11 and it was very special with all the termoil in New York. I could not begin to explain all the feelings and emotion that was brought out while they performed. Glad you posted.

By the way I think we have traded (pics). Let me know if you are the same Cheyenne with an e-mail at mfdiver39@hotmail.com Thanks

*bump* for those who want to watch them on TV tonight at 7 pm.

p.s. to mfdiver: I don't send out too many pictures to people, and I don't think I've ever sent pics to someone from WI ever. Too close to home.

Cheyenne,
Thank you for your reponse. To close to home! Oh well just had to ask. If you ever get a chance to go to Salt Lake City and here them sing in the Church it would be a wild thing.

For those of us that have blessed with the chance to hear them in person, it is an experience that you cannot describe. We were fortunate enough to hear them in a practice and in concert. Their organist also gives concerts that are open to the public. The members pay all of their own expenses and I do mean all. No matter what you think of their church, you have to admire the devotion and commitment of the members. No I am not a Mormon and in fact, have some personal feelings against them but I'll be in love with the choir forever.

*bump*

Just wanted to bump this up once more. I think the section on the choir will be the last segment on the show so maybe another 10 to 15 minutes from now...

Well, being a former Irish Catholic who went to Catholic school and hated every minute of it, and now being a non-christian, I'm not really big on hymns...

But I love "Battle Hymn of the Republic".. it's an absolutely wonderful song, and I think hearing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing it would be great, but unfortunately I don't have cable *sigh*

I believe the choir is also famous for its patriotic songs, not just religious music. The show tonight is on one of the networks here, not on a cable station. Sorry you'll miss it Moridin. I'm not even sure how much singing they'll do. I think it is a feature on the members, and how dedicated they are to belong to the choir.
