I don't really know how I should start this off, so I will go off of what I know. I have been an anonymous reader on Literotica for about eight years now, and after reading a dreadful story this afternoon I felt the urge to write. (By dreadful I mean it made me want to bang my head on my desk repeatedly until blood came out my ears.) The worst part of this story was not the story itself, but that it was ranked in the tops list and was only mediocre at best. I'm not going to be a pompous and pretentious jerk, I just want to do a couple stories how I would write them. (I also want to finish a few series, were it seems the author just fell off the face of the earth.) The first task that came to mind when I thought of writing, was that I need an editor. I need more then an editor, I need someone willing to trade ideas, someone willing to tell me my idea's are total rubbish. (When necessary of course.) Think of it as literary matrimony, and as another requirement I need someone with a good sense of humor. Feel free to ask questions etc. and if this is in the wrong place, then my bad.

You might be better off asking this in the Story ideas forum. The authors hangout might seem like a logical place, but very little discussion about writing takes place there.

The rating system and scores cannot be taken seriously. It is arbitrary and completely subjective. Some people give low scores because they did not like the subject matter and give no credit for the quality of the writing. Others give high scores to a story because it touched their particular fantasy.

There are hundreds of techniques for getting words on paper (on on screen). The only essential element is the desire to tell a story. For a lot of Lit authors, writing porn stories is a phase. It satisfies a particular need in their life and as time passes, needs change. Some take their work to other places or just find other things to occupy their time.

If you want to discuss story plot lines and other elements, feel free to send me a PM.

The OP will have to enable PMs first.

You will want PMs on.

Please ensure you have switched on your Private Messages. Go to User CP (top left of this page), click on Edit Options (in the left hand column), and then tick Enable Private Messaging in the second box down. Make sure that the next box down (Receive Private Messages only from Buddies and Moderators) is NOT ticked. Finally click Save Changes at the bottom of that page.

Alright, I turned on PMs, sorry about that. Something I particularly want to see finished is:
http://www.literotica.com/s/gift-from-a-god-ch-01

The author has not touched it in over five years, and I will be damned if such a great story goes un-finished. I'm a huge mythology fan, and the characters are lovely as well. (The only thing in the entire story that really bugged me, was that the author did not seem to know the difference between "to" and "too.") Anyways, this would be a large undertaking, and now I have my PM on I will be open for suggestions help etc. The only problem is I worry about my attention span, and that all the effort I might put into could in fact ruin the story for me. Like I said message me if you have any interest.

Ummm, you weren't thinking of "finishing off" someone else's work without their permission, were you?

I was thinking more along the lines of a "similar" story. I'm not sure about the copyright issues plagiarism, which now that I think about is most likely a good idea. I wanted to kind of pass it off as a fan-fiction rather then a valid continuation. You kind of shut me down right there... I don't mind writing something of my own invention, that would actually mean less work for me in the short term. Is there a way to ethically continue his work without invoking some greater power? Either way I still need an editor, maybe even a trial run editor at that. Your feedback is always appreciated, thanks!

Murky territory. It's not so much a legal issue as one of writing ethics. I'm not sure where the edges are anymore, but writers don't usually muck around with someone else's characters/plotlines--especially with an unfinished series--until the original work has gone into the public domain--and even then the descendents of the original author often grumble and posture a lot if permission to continue hasn't been given.

I have tried to contact him as to get permission to write the end, but as I said he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. It seems sad to let what he wrote up until now to go to waste, I had a feeling I was in line for a great plot twist. I do have some story ideas of my own, but let me lay down some things that will most likely be static in all of my stories.

Protagonist: Male

Age: eighteen to late twenties.

I like a main character I can relate to, then again I might decide not to give a definite race/age to allow a connection of some sort.

Greek mythology has been used as a theme for several thousand years. There is always a new angle on the story. My Fair Lady is based on a Pygmalion, a poem by Ovid, who got the idea from a myth.

If you think your idea is good, make it your own story. There is no need to pick up where one left off.

Shortly after posting my previous post, I actually came up with the basis for a story. (My own story.) Not really Greek mythology or Egyptian Nordic etc., but I may in fact incorporate some into my story. I would post my idea here except for the off chance that it gets "borrowed" and used elsewhere. I almost feel like a hypocrite with my obvious double standard. I might just skip editing, but it seems like a step I often regret skipping later on... blah. blah. etc. etc.

Ah yes, the old "Mine is better than yours" complex. I know it well. I have experienced it. It's frustrating as nothing else. You know your story is technically better than another but it flounders. But Lit is not about which story is technically best and accurate. I'm not sure what the key is. Maybe it's about which writer has more of a following of fans, just a guess.

I can edit for you, just PM me.
