These were incredibly important issues, at the time. And the reason they were so incredibly important was that society had collectively defined them as important issues-- until the bulk of society decided they were not so incredibly important. Some people still think they are incredibly important.
People have always had a problem telling the difference between what's important to them, personally, and what's important to society.
One of my favorite examples of this, was during those now-long-ago blackouts in New York City, when some five hundred or more gathered in Central park for the Rapture. They figured that the power outage was pure proof of the end of the world-- when all it was really, was the plans of men going awry...
