WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is commending NBA veteran Jason Collins for becoming the first active male player in the four major American professional sports to come out as gay.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called that decision courageous and says the White House supports Collins. He says he hopes the 34-year-old center’s team will also offer support.

Carney says the White House views Collins’ decision as another example of progress and evolution in the U.S. as Americans grow more accepting of gay rights and same-sex marriage. Last year, during his re-election campaign, Obama announced his support for gay marriage.

Collins disclosed he was gay Monday in a first-person account posted on Sports Illustrated’s website. He has played for six teams in 12 seasons, including this past season with the Washington Wizards.

As for what response other NBA players will have to his revelation, Collins writes: "The simple answer is, I have no idea."

"Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it's a good place to start. It all comes down to education. I'll sit down with any player who's uneasy about my coming out," he says in his account, adding: "Still, if I'm up against an intolerant player, I'll set a pretty hard pick on him. And then move on."...

So he's threatening physical aggression against other people for their moral values on sexual behavior. And they are the ones who are "intolerant."

Seriously, this is not a funny matter. There will ALWAYS be people who feel the choice to engage in homosexual activity is wrong, just as there are people who feel that pre-marital sex, divorce, watching porn, or whatever about sex is wrong.

That all these powerful establishment forces are telling them, at least a third, and maybe even half the population, that they have no place in America is wrong and at some point there will be a backlash. Sexual activity is not an immutable characteristic, people have a right to have an opinion on it even one which differs from that of David Stern, Roger Godell, Gary Bettman, Michelle Obama, Jason Collins, Lady Gaga, or anybody else.

Look, I have a gay father. He's succesfully battled HIV since the late 80's and is pretty much poster boy for how that's done. He's also a great guy. If it wasn't for him? I'd be in a fucking ditch some somewhere, rolling around in the muck of victimhood. When I fall apart? He's got me.

In addition to that I've got an ice cold mother who I haven't really spoken to for the better part of 20yrs. She shut off somewhere in my mid-teens, emotionally. So my divorced Dad picked up the slack.

Thus, I've got nothing against gay people. Right?


But, honestly, I'm sick and tired of this idea we all need to get on board and start clapping for some dude with a dick who'd rather push it up one of his own than do what nature calls you to.
