Proposal: Monthly Poetry Challenge?

I imagine the poetry wanes and waxes in cycles here, and I haven't been around long enough to see the seasons come and go, but I'm feeling the energy around here at low tide as of late.

I know I respond well to challenges, especially because I get to rub...elbows...with so many other poets, which, um, arouses my muse and stirs my creative juices. Challenges are potent inspiration.

My idea is this...we beat the bushes and get 12 people to agree to facilitate and moderate one poetry challenge each over the next 12 months. The challenge could be posted at the beginning of the month and due 2-3 weeks later, with an open one-week critique period to follow, and then the cycle starts over again.

I'd be willing to do the first month's challenge, and to moderate the Monthly Poetry Challenge - Logisitics thread, where the monthly challenge faciltitators/moderators could be coordinated.

We could decide on a meta-theme, such as seasons or cycles or beauty, or we could leave the themes up to the facilitator/moderators.

Consider this post a seed idea and let' see what it sprouts.

Anyone else game...whattaya think?

Sure, why not? I'll stick my toe in or any part to see this forum going again.

I agree that challenges are definitely an activity I look forward to on the board. It would be nice to see one each month and I would love to moderate. My problem is that I can't guarantee my availability. I'm waiting for major surgery and I'm not sure when the operation will happen nor when I'll be recovered enough to have the energy to devote to the project.

Put me down for it and I'll tentatively offer my time for the spring of 2007.

Not too sure about what it means to moderate.

I would love a good challenge though.

many thanks...

yay for cool poetry writing idea!

great idea! i agree! what's in bold should be set in concrete. the rest is where the discussion comes in.

you're up for the first month S&D? cool bananas. sounds like a start for August. slot me in for any month except January (i'm usually offline for three weeks from Christmas day so would be useless to set anything up at that point).

here's some monthly ideas to toss around:

same title challenge - each poem to have the same title
six word challenge - each poem to use the word list given in their poem
subject - each poem based on a particular subject (could be current affairs, art, a specific colour, season, etc. )
object - each poem to be based on a single object (object could be suggested or chosen)

maybe others have ideas too :)

new, old, craggy, scatterbrained... come and join in, this is a great idea to keep the poetry forum humming! :)

maybe i'll start volunteering people for you S&D. *wicked grin*

I think that's a great start...more then enough to launch this space shuttle without worries of failing foam (foam was never very dependable without a condom anyway, but I guess it would be hard to find one big enough to slip over the shuttle).

Not to be USA-centric, the recent US space shuttle launch was lamost aborted due to cracks int he protective foam heat shell. It was quite a drama to some in the states.

Being a moderator or faciltitator of a month just means putting a challenge out there on the first of the month and firing the starting gun, giving thank yous and encouragment to those who enter a poem, encouraging those who enter a poem to also offer crtitques of as many poems as they feel moved or able to critique, and waving the checkered flag to end the challenge when it's complete. I think it would be important for every poet to receive feedback. I think the poet who is responsible for a given month ought to make sure that all poems and their poets receive some feedack.

I'll make another post to discuss what parameters, if any, we're going to agree on for designing challenges.

I said I would take August, so please commence negotiations for the follwowing months (naked oil wrestling matches will be used to decide andy stalemates). I'll keep track of the info as we go:

August.....S&D
Sept.........
Oct...........
Nov..........
Dec...........
Jan...........
Feb...........

If you feel so inclined, fill a second month...my goal is to have 12 months filled:

March........
April..........
May...........
June..........
July...........S&D

I'll fill in if needed wherever I can to keep this train rolling.

Thank each of you for putting yourselves out there for this. I know it's not easy to make a commitment when time is so precious in most people's lives. The poetry Gods and Godesses will bless you thrice fold!

:rose:

Great ideas, wso, as usual. :rose: You can write a lesson plan for me anyday!

Here's some of my ideas for how to structure the Motnhly Poetry Challenge:

I propose that the monthly challenge be presented and begin on the first day of the month and be open for 14 days. I also propose that the feedback period begin on day 15 and go to the last day of the month.

I propose that each monthly facilitator be fully responsible for his or her month's challenge idea.

I propose that the monthly facilitator choose whether or not to enter his or her own challenge, with no expectation either way, but that said facilitator offer as many critiques as he or she can during his or her month.

I propose that their be two threads to handle this operation, one called Monthly Poetry Challenge, and th eother called Monthly Poetry Challenge - Logistics.

I offered to facilitate the logistics thread and will do so.

Question: would it be possible to get the Monthly Poetry Challenge thread to be a Stcky thread on the Poetry Forum list? I'm not sure how any of that works.

This is the time to put all ideas on the table. The more the merrier. If we create the parameters for this together it'll be like Group Specs. :D

Fire when ready, poets!

tee hee...

I will take a month but it should be later in the year so that I have an understanding of what is required. Not sure if my critiques would be worth much but will definitely try. : )

can't wait to get this going... (BIG SMILES)
