Our government paid everyone $900 to go spend it and create jobs. 2/3 of Aussies went and paid their bills and loans or saved it, including me. With the R word hanging around, who didn't see that one coming?

What are they doing in your part of the world?

It's all about perception. Some would say, in America, our government just pissed away a trillion dollars rewarding slimeballs for malfeacence. Others, looking at the same events, would say the government just saved the financial sector from going over a very high cliff. I'm hoping, when the dust settles, the public learns of the true ramifications of not keeping the financial sector afloat. For example, how would Joe Sixpack feel if he went to the bank machine to get some cash for the NASCAR race and discovered the bank was no longer in business? Or that his last paycheck was nothing but worthless paper? (I happen to have one of those on my desk. Fortunately, it was for a one-off gig, not a steady job.)

A more direct answer to your question would be: many are pissing and moaning in an ignorance-induced stupor, blaming the current government for the actions of the previous government. Many others are taking a pragmatic approach to the situation, looking for ways to cut back, looking to embrace alternatives to the unsustainable lifestyle we have been lulled into expecting after all these years of living beyond our means.

One thing they're not doing - buying new cars. Too bad, since the last episode of $4 gas was the perfect incentive to scale down with more fuel-efficient vehicles - something Detroit was unprepared for.
