Setting
Atlantic City, December of 1922. The heart of the Prohibition era and rise of Organized Crime in the United States. Atlantic City, centrally located along two major roadways leading to Chicago and New York, has become a veritable bootlegger's boom town. Boats, filled with illegal liquor, run in and out of the ports on a daily basis. Trucks loaded to the gills with whiskey shuffle northward to supply the Big Apple. Money, ill-begotten and ill-gained, moves like water through everyone's fingers.

Our characters, for all their differences, will live and operate out of Bug Eyed Betty's. A cathouse/gin joint operated by an unlikely pair of friends, Betty's is located in the heart of the black slums along Atlantic City's outskirts. It has a diverse stable of young women with flexible moral character who service a wide variety of patrons. These patrons, both white and black, represent the down and out amongst a city that is otherwise firmly held by established magnates. We begin, all of us, with humble origins and big aspirations.

Themes
Each character is possessed by a different motive. All characters, despite these differences, are united by two very common threads. The first is that all, despite their position, which to do better for themselves. The second is that they see this group as the easiest way to climb from where they presently stand.

The themes here will be adult and difficult. Sexism will be at the heart of this thread as women have only begun to make small, significant steps towards fair treatment. Racism will be another undercurrent here. Most characters, either consciously or unconsciously, will exhibit behaviors that involve stereotyping or flat-out bigotry. And, most important of all, morality. Women and men will explore a sudden acceptance in regards to sexuality and indulgences of all kinds.

Characters
The following roles will be played.

Black Businessman - fr33ks33k:
Pillar of his community, our hero represents a man who was born in perpetual hardship and has raised himself over every obstacle he can. He is uneducated, but cunning and possesses a strong moral compass. His primary concern is the state of his community. It is a fear of the Italian mafia families and their blatantly racist attitudes that has lead him to accept a partnership with our White Businessman. His goal is to provide opportunity and safety for the people in his community while raising his own station. He is handsome, capable, and one of our leads. A leader of men.

White Businessman - dryfter:
A morally sound entrepreneur whose personal code would not allow him to break the law, our second hero found himself suddenly outclassed by rival magnates whose wallets were abruptly bolstered by investments and participation in the illegal liquor trade. Overcome, cast out, he possesses only a fraction of his previous fortune and has invested all of it into his partnership with our Black Businessman. His goal is to create a flourishing enterprise that is vastly profitable for he, and his partner, and allows him to get some measure of revenge on the men that overcame him. He is handsome, capable, and the man with all the angles.

The Muscle (White) - Light Ice:
A former made man in a New York Family, our character finds himself alone after being sold out and betrayed over a territorial dispute. He is out for revenge of all sorts, fiscal and otherwise. The skills he brings to the table are mostly brutal - though he has a warm relationship with the black community and is skilled at judging and advising on how to handle hired help. His goal is to handle the small assortment of men, of mixed backgrounds, that make up our lead roles force. He is not traditionally handsome, strong, and capable.

The Madame (Black) - Apollo_Wilde
A young woman whose political intelligence has allowed her to rise quickly, and on her own two feet, this character represents part of the face of Betty's. Betty's is owned and operated exclusively by the two madames at its helm. This, while a great accomplishment, puts the pair in constant peril from outside sources. The agreement she's struck with our budding bootlegging heroes is a simple one. Protection for influence. She can help feed them information only a girl can learn from a man's pillow and in response keeps her business, gains protection, and gains a foothold in the profitable enterprise of bootlegging. She is beautiful, capable, and our female lead.

The Madame (White) - AmbrosiaCaress
A young woman who possesses a gentility of manner and great polish, this character represents the emotionally sensitive and aware member of our unlikely group. She cares for the stable of women who entertain at Betty's and represents a truly compassionate (albeit opportunistic) heart. This character's ability to soothe minds and hearts makes her invaluable to the team - not only as salve for the rocky relationship and unstable circumstances of the partnership at hand. But also, in a pinch, for always knowing exactly what can diffuse a bad situation and help people find the best in everything. She is sweet, she is capable, she is beautiful. She is one of our leads.

The Girl (White/Black/Asian/?) - MadMissJ
A working girl, our character represents a wild card to the game. She's keen on getting out of the cathouse and slide herself into the bootlegging operation and will eventually prove to have the metal to do so. Look for this girl to be as likely to slit a man's throat when she has his pants down than to do anything else. She's the tough girl of those stabled at Betty's and has been known to have her own way with an out of line John when the moment is right. She is fierce. She is sexy.

I am presently considering additional roles. Concepts and inquiries should be made via PM.

Note:
These character biographies are a general guidance for how the thread binds characters together. They are not restrictive and are open to the writer's to do with as they please. As such, they will most likely change some in their roles as the story progresses.

Please, post brief blurbs on your characters. You do not have to share anything explicit here. That's what the story is for.

Cormac Everett

Name: Cormac Everett
Alias: "Macky-E"
From: Cork, Ireland (originally)
Brooklyn, New York
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 215lbs
Profession: Dockworker, Soldier, Hired Hand

Reputation:
Loyal
Unnervingly Quiet

Brought In:
By our Black Businessman. Laying low in the negro part of town saw him gathered up and put to use by our hero. A man who, while prone to speaking through racial stereotypes, harbors no real bigotry - he gets along very well. His first order of business was to operate as an enforcer of sorts at Betty's where he distinguished himself by his cold, brutal application of force in situations where it was warranted (sometimes only barely so). He mixes with the girls and pays like any other customer, treating them politely but otherwise indifferently.

He has his own room, a glorified broom closet, in the cellar.

MadMissJ is onboard. :rose:

We need our White Businessman, now. I'd really like a talented and capable writer to seize him.

Name: Katsumi Kimura
Alias: "Kat” to most; if you’re unlucky “Kitten-Claws Kimura”
From: San Francisco, California
Height: 5’ 7”
Weight: 112 lbs.
Profession: Working Girl

Reputation:
Impetuous
Driven
Insatiable

Brought In:
She likes to think she’s the big deal at Betty’s. Kat seems to live on the razors edge of poverty and her own delusions of grandeur. She’s grown from a pick-pocketing little cut-throat to a woman of leisure, at least for the amount of time she spends on her back. But she’s had plenty of time lay back and think of how to pull herself out the busy cathouse, and set herself up with something more. Spying eyes and eager ears and pillow talk, were fine to begin with. But she’d do anything to carve out a nice piece of the action for herself.

Her room is upstairs, a sparsely furnished receiving space for customers, with a few personal touches.

Name: Evangeline Dasani

Alias: Most call her Eve or Eva.
(altho Cormac calls her ED when he teases her or wants her attention)

From: Born in Miami, FL.. Moved to Baton Rouge LA when she was 7

Hair: Deep red

Eyes: Golden sage

Height: 5’ 8"

Weight: 129 lbs.

Profession: She is one of the Owners... She considers herself the Caretaker, the Muse, the Teacher, perhaps even the Protector of the girls

Reputation:
Speaks her mind and her opinion
Intelligent
Insightful
Observant
Honest
Loyal
Sarcastic when crossed

Brought In:

She was not brought in by anyone.. she was the Bringer, along with Rita, the other Madame, who happens to be her best friend.... She is one of the Owners, she and Rita are the heart, the brains, the blood, and the soul of this place.

Her role is the girls caretaker, the one who the girls trust, perhaps even love... the older sister, the confidant, the best friend...

She takes care of their needs, from the basic... food, water, clothing... to the condition of the rooms they sleep in and work in... along with the much more complicated, ie: counselor, teacher, nurse, best friend, "sister", and sometimes the pitbull that keeps some of the men in line. She is not afraid to stand up to anyone when needed, and has a sharp tongue. But she prefers diplomacy, talking, and soothing over anything else. She is observant to a fault, can read people well, and knows when she is needed and should be vocal to when she should stay hidden and quiet. She is easy to talk to, and does not judge.

She speaks her mind, and stands tall, even in the face of fear... Her sharp tongue can cut down even the boldest, most brazen of men or women.

The reason she is here, in Atlantic City, the partial owner of what is commonly known as a whore house, despite the euphemisms one may call it.... is pretty simple. She was tired of being seen as nothing more than a pretty face, tired of being used, first by her step father, and then by a long series of men. Tired of being poor, needing to ask for the simple staples needed to survive. She was NOT going to do that again. She would NOT be used again. This.. afforded her the means to be the User, not the Used... And altho her beauty may mistaken her for one of the Working Girls, she was not, and she made that well known, sweetly, politely, but it was well known....

dryfter has joined as our White Businessman lead. That sets our principle cast. I'll keep our recruitment open for a couple additional roles if someone impresses. Our opening will be up before terribly long. I'll wait for the other little character profiles to get pushed up.

Name: Rita Maveaux
Alias: Miss Maveaux
From: Baton Rogue, Louisiana
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 130 lbs
Profession: Madame, businesswoman, and political activist

Reputation:
Intelligent
No nonsense
Pragmatic

Personality:

She isn’t what you would call “difficult” to approach, but you have to approach on your best behavior. Even though she left Louisiana years ago, she brought with her its customs and language, and insists on manners and dignity above all. White, black - doesn’t matter; money is green and transcends all languages, religions, and races.

Name: William Ellingsworth
Alias: "The Limey"
From: Liverpool, England
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 185 lbs
Profession: businessman, currently in transition.

Reputation: Intelligent, suave, polite and courteous sometimes to a fault, yet jaded and determined to once more live the life he once had. Even his enemies and those who have betrayed him in the past are wary of his vast web of European connections.

History: William did not originally intend to be a regular at a gin joint/cathouse. In fact, nothing could have been further from his mind a three years ago when his import/export business made him a household name in New York. But if there was anything in the world that could have crushed his aspirations, it was his own honesty, and his misguided willingness to trust people first. Eventually, that naivety trumped even his own business sense as he found more and more of his competitors not only bolstering their own business with running illegal booze, but using it to cement stronger shipping deals as well leaving him with dwindling connections in the transport business. William was effectively bottlenecked, unable to move his own legal merchandise in and out of harbor.

But now he has a second chance. Throwing his hat in with his negro partner hadn't been a hard decision, certainly not with the racial slurs he himself had endured, growing to power in this city and state. So he entrusted the last of his fortune into this one last shot.....while doing his best to keep up outward appearances and not let it show that a bank account that had once held millions, now only held a few thousand.

This was not going to be his last gasp.

One more biography to go up and I'll start us off. This looks like it's going to be great.

Name: Maurice Livingston
Alias: "Jazz"
From: Brooklyn, NY transplanted to Atlantic City for business
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 175 lbs

Bio: He's held many jobs, but not many titles. Done many things that his momma might have frowned upon, but only so that he could make ends meet or do the right thing for his family. If that means getting a little dirty, then that's the price of the work. Book smarts never really were his forte, but his streetwise nature has always been his lucky charm and his upper hand. Knowing who to talk to, when to talk to 'em, and how to talk to 'em. That's the game, and Jazz plays it well.

With the influx of the mafioso and their bully-boy ways, it seemed like it would be overnight that the African-American population would get pushed out, not just at home, but everywhere those guidos got their paws on. The only way to keep their place, the one they'd fought long and damned hard for, was to push back. Black market booze was the order of the day; everyone wanted it because no one was supposed to have it. Finding a foothold in that supply chain would cement a good meal in everyone's belly and protection from the cold winter. The key to that foothold was capital, and without a whole lot of it, Jazz was certainly happy to partner up with ol' Limey Ellingsworth. White money always went further, even if everyone was ruled by green.

Appearance

Alright, so its a busy weekend for me but I will start us off in the next day or so.
