No, no doppelgängers or split personalities, we’re talking adoptive vs bio.

Our protagonist has had a crush on his mom’s friend for some time. She’s a few years younger than his mom, perfect body, and he just finds it really easy to talk to her. So it’s little wonder he starts having wet dreams about her and even starts trying to find ways to catch her nude or hook up with her.

Only thing is…protagonist doesn’t know that mom’s friend is his biological mother. She had him way too early so his mom stepped up and adopted him. Bio mom was ashamed at herself and took some time to get herself together. She came back and was going to introduce herself to her son but saw how happy he was so she and his adoptive mon agreed to just not tell him till later…they probably should have told him sooner.

So the question is, how far does son get before he learns the truth? Does Bio mom even figure out the reaction she’s having on her son before he makes his move?

You don't have to make it that complicated, really. In a closed adoption, the mother would have never laid eyes on the egg donor and know next to nothing about her. But, obviously, giving birth is the sort of thing bound to stick with you. So, an easy peek at birth certificates from a hospital where only so many births would be registered on a given day and exact time would give the egg donor the names needed to find them.

So, she checks up on things and finds them happy. But, unable to completely let go now, she moves to town, even into the neighborhood. Maybe even takes a teaching gig at the local school or whatever, although that might be an unnecessary complication. Inserting herself surreptitiously into "her" child's life. Neither Mom nor the kid knows a damn thing.

Years later, (when the kid is eighteen obviously) shit gets confusing only for her when he obviously has a crush and starts making moves... and he looks so much like the sperm donor she was in love with that disappeared when his family uprooted and moved away before they found out she was pregnant...

***shrug*** It keeps it simpler with only one character knowing the full relationship. Otherwise, you'd have to deal with Mom being okay with the egg donor coming back into their lives and potentially taking the kid. And the kid finding shit out early. While conflict is the root of all good storytelling, too much conflict can push the reader past their bullshit meter.

So, keep the internal conflict to a minimum and contained all in one person, the egg donor.

Until after the deed is done, of course. Then she (beset by guilt) tells the kid, the kid (freaking out) tells Mom, and break out popcorn as the drama more fully unfolds in the aftermath.

As a variation on theme, what if both women gave birth together and the babies got mixed up? It have happened. Then only the problem is how the truth nobody at all knows is found out in the last moment, and by whom?

perhaps the bio Mom is a NEW hot friend Mom doesn't meet until son is 18?
So ALL the choices are truly his.
Need to check with Carney, but I think that thee is a rule they need to gave a threesome.

Some possibles ....

Mom and Mom were a surrogate arrangement both knowing all, but went their separate ways for years. Sonny meets Mom without knowing. mom and Mom get reacquainted and we have the opening post above.

Mom gave up the kid anonymously and later sought things out as in post 2 above.

Mom gave up the kid anonymously but never sought him out. Sonnyboy meets Mom without either Mom knowing who anyone is. Sonnyboy and Mom hit it off as a couple and get it on. They only find out after.

A quirky bit of genetics via earwax or earlobes or hair/eye colour or second toe length. Well that proves that their Mom isn't their real mom and once that cat gets let out of the bag everything else follows.

I’m okay with a birth switch but the big thing is that I want both mom’s to be friends.

I wanted to kind of invert the “we’re not related” taboo fantasies by having it so the adoptive or switched family has no attraction to our male lead (or leads) but he or they are very interested in the “aunt” that comes over often.

Birth switch could be a fun way to work the story. The moms became friends in the maternity ward and found out they don’t live far away so they became fast friends. Both their husbands pass away so they also bond in their grief.

When the sons grow up they both look at each others mom’s and get the idea to seduce them. Mom’s are a bit reluctant but after making it clear it’s just a fling and everyone is fine with it (and under no circumstances are they sleeping with their sons), they have a summer affair. However, one mom notices their friend’s son has a feature their late husband had. They do a genetic test and find out that without a shadow of a doubt, they are the biological mother of their friend’s son.

Do they keep that knowledge secret? It’s not like they were planning a long relationship and they’re practicing safe sex…but their sons are going to wonder why they suddenly don’t want to have sex anymore after weeks of debauchery.

Both? At once? Isn't a little much? Maybe one goes away to distant college while the other stays close, effectively getting two moms as the one now lonely seeks to mommy him, just to fill the need... what the guy may misinterpret or abuse, or both.

Maybe it's the far son who's got into a situation where some genetic testing is done, and finds out he's definitely isn't his mom's son (as I understand, this is a case where negative is much easier proof than positive... oh and on the female side there the mitochondrial genome that doesn't mix in a man, so it's quite definitive both ways). Maybe he freaks out and the damage control force the truth.

Well if we’re doing a swap both sons would just be fun but just one would work. In that case maybe son who stays has both parents while son who left only has his mom.

Some medical issue occurs with surviving husband and an organ donation or blood transfusion is needed…and son can’t do it…but his friend can, which leads to a genetic test which brings everything out in the open.

... and Dad rejects him. so he has no choice but to...

I have a poker buddy who is a doctor and works in a large hospital. He mentioned one poker night that he and his wife were trying to adopt.

I said "Don't you work in a hospital? Just go to the maternity ward and snag one of the newborns out of that big room with all the cribs. Nobody will ever notice."

For some reason, he rejected my advice. But if he had wisely followed it, it would have been a great backstory for a story of this type.

. . . would love to steal this >>>

it's not stealing to claim something off Story Ideas unless someone already did, or the OP says they are writing it & just looking for suggestions. even then, two versions are often welcomed, just etiquette to say that you want seconds, I think.

Carney- your views?

Such a great framework for a storyline.
So much gray matter that is begging to be focused towards black and white
