Does anyone know how moderators are appointed?

I ask because of the following from another thread:

Yes, I am a Mod here ... I was also a Mod a couople of years ago before I gave the position to a friend of mine ...

I find it personally distasteful that someone who has a reputation for being nasty to all and sundry and who often includes gratuitous insults in their posts should be a Moderator.

I also find it odd that the post of Moderator should be a personel possession one which can be handed on "to a friend" rather than appointed centrally.

Can anyone enlighten me?

On the bottom right hand corner of each posting it offers the option to "report this post to a moderator". I have always assumed that they then decide whether the posting should be allowed to stay on the board. Some threads are moderated and all postings are pre-vetted before being accepted.

Laurel or Manu -- the owners of the site -- assign moderators to those forums who need them. How they decide who to assign probably varies from moderator to moderator, but usually dpends on the willingness of the chosen moderator and recommendations from others.

I imagine that the recommendation of a moderator they're pleased with carries a bit of weight when replacing them.

If you have a complaint about a specific moderator, add an e-mail to Laurel's inbox -- if you can catch a day when it's not full.

I am not "nasty to all", Charm. I am sorry that you hate me. Nothing I can do or say will ever change that, though. Ya know, since this thread is about me, you could have PMed me or even Laurel with your question.

Yes, when I was a Mod for the Personals board the first time around, and personal life left me too busy to keep track of the place well, I suggested to Laurel that Renegade take over since I felt he was qualified for the "job" as it were. I even suggested to Laurel, when I asked if she needed a Mod for the Personals, that Mackdaddy would be a good person for a Co-Mod.

As of late, both Renny and Mack have been busy men in real life. I asked Laurel if she needed help in Personals since neither men made it back to Lit too often anymore. She wrote me back and she reappointed me as one of the Mods. Simple as that.

Again, I am sorry that you hate me and I am sorry you feel the "need" to be rude to me whenever you can. I cannot change your feelings or actions towards me. Maybe someday you'll grow up a bit?

Who Can Moderate:

It's probably the most difficult part of the process: who is allowed to moderate. On one hand, many people say "Everyone," but I've chosen to avoid that path because the potential for abuse is so great. Instead, I've set up a few simple rules for determining who is eligible to moderate.

* Logged In User: If the system can't keep track, it won't work, so you gotta log in. Sorry if you're paranoid, but this system demands a certain level of accountability.

* Regular Readers: The scripts track average accesses from each logged-in user. It then selects eligible users who read an average number of times. The homepage doesn't count either. It then picks users from the middle of the pack- no obsessive compulsive reloaders, and nobody who just happened to read an article this week.

* Long Time Readers: The system throws out the newest few thousand accounts. This prevents people from creating new accounts to simply get moderator access, but more importantly, means that newbies will have to be part of the community for a few weeks before they gain access to the controls to a system they don't understand.

* Willing to Serve: If you don't want to moderate, just visit your user preferences, and set yourself as "Unwilling."

* Positive Contributors: The site tracks your "karma." If you have Positive, Good, or Excellent karma, this means you have posted more good comments than bad, and are eligible to moderate. This weeds out spam accounts.
