I know- knowbody, least of all me, wants a moderator.

But you know what would be kind of cool? If someone were able to put together an index (sticky) thread (they have these on the BDSM boad) to help people find topics of interest. For example, we talk about phylosophy, religion, politics, moods, sex- oh yeah, sometimes writing... so many things. It would be kind of neet to have it organized in some way so that we could search for the type of thing we want to talk about, or quickly find what's previously been said about it.

I don't think we'd have to make anybody a moderator in order to do it, but they'd probably have to be able to get special authorization of some sort in order to do the kind of heavy editing and upkeep something like that would take.

(I'm *not* volunteering btw, I'd never be able to keep up with it.)

Does anyone else think this would be a cool idea?

(PS- the 'moderator' title, was just to get your attention. Would you have opened a thread called Indexing?)

Sweet, I think it's a pretty good idea.

Over on the BDSM boards, the person who does it is called the "BDSM Librarian". I don't think she has any special moderator capabilities. The main BDSM Library thread is a sticky, but I think the mods there (Catalina_Fransisco) made it a sticky.

The librarian there has put a lot of time and effort into it, and she volunteered to do it. She's created "Reference Only" threads, in which she lists links to all threads and topics related to certain subjects. We could do a very similar thing here.

Now, would anyone here be willing to do that?

I might... I'll think about it some more.

Lou

Edited to add: I think all topics in the library should be linked to writing, as well as the frequently asked questions that come up here (How long? How many votes...? etc), as well as perhaps linking to other threads which provide a resource (Newbie Support Forum, for example). It could be expanded, but I do think that's the best place to start.

Links to chain stories (there are still several active ones) would be a good thing to add as well.

Wasn't this discussed not too long ago? The question was if AH needed a moderator, and the concensus was a resounding NO.

Then the question became "Ok, but how about one only for posting stickys and such stuff?" And the answer again was a resounding naah.

Did the tide turn? :)

Crim, good idea! I'm sure that would be helpful to many.

Yep, Sher, that's a good title. Better than "Librarian".

Sweet, what do you think about all this?

Liar, this is very different. Read the posts again. ;)

There has been no talk of anyone being given special "privileges". I have merely volunteered to archive some stuff. I wouldn't be able to create the sticky.

I think it sounds great- if your willing to take it on.

I'm not sure I understand the part about all topics linked to writing, since not everything we post here is linked to writing.

As a hint, I'd suggest when making the thread, start by posting 1 post section for each letter of the alphabet. Then you can edit it later to add topics that pertain to that letter. (Can probably put some letters together like Q and R or whatever.)

Also, the way that thread is made, it links to at least one other thread, I think (also reference only which are not sticky, but tucked neatly out of view.) For example, you click on the topic of "Newbies" and it takes you to another thread that lists threads on the topic. (I don't know if we want to do that, but maybe whoever is archiving would want to ask over there why they felt this was easier or convienient) I'd definatly talk to them and see what pitfalls could be avoided and stuff like that.

F- could have 'fun threads' which is a better description than miscelanious:) (and we probably still have some of those.)

Fun threads would probably then be broken down into 'word games' 'lounges and hangouts' 'flirting' 'nonsense' ect. (Fun threads are for the most part 'meaningless' or not as conversational as other threads- of course all our threads are fun here, lol)

FAQ's would be great, and imo, could be put at the top and out of alphabetical order.

And yes, i think that an archivist would be much different from a moderator. Like I said, I just used that word to get some attention (Kinda rude of me, I know;))

And don't forget links for people to whinge/whine about their lives, boredom, lack of money, love or sex, etc. There should also be an "I know this really belongs on Jerry Springer" category for those who want to confess the most personal stuff about their real or cyber lives and loves.

Put me under sarcasm or ennui.

Made me snicker. :p

Sweet, I haven't heard back from Laurel yet, so it's all still on hold anyway. I've been giving it a lot of thought today, and I don't think a blanket a-z of all threads of all types ever posted here at the AH is something that would be beneficial, or worthy of taking so much time over. I would like to start with indexing merely the stuff relating to writing and relating directly to Lit. I probably would expand it, over time, but I don't want it to be too complex and far-reaching too soon.

There does need to be some kind of structure to it, and a starting point, and, logistically, I think that's the best way to go.

I will talk to s'lara, over on the BDSM boards, as I believe she is the librarian there, and ask her why she indexed it the way she did (with other threads, leading off from the root).

That's odd. <flipping through notes>

I could have sworn I had you listed under Romance...with special cross-referencing to Witty and Adorable....<G><wink>

I've heard back from Laurel, she said, "Sure thing!" She'll sticky the root thread, once I've created it. It may take some time... ;)

Do we need to find you a pair of large framed glasses? :D

Yup, and my hair is already in a bun. I also have a chewed pencil hanging out of my mouth. :D

I pity anyone who comes here looking for information rather than interaction. All you have here are opinions, and most people who want opinions want them fresh and in real time.

Just what kind of threads do you think would be worth archiving? And don't we already have a search function?

I'd like it if there was more smilleys. I was on another bulletin board once, and they had more smilleys.

On a serios note couldnt we boot off all the stupid political race hate this hate that crap somewhere else and run the AH thread more in tune with the Author/fun side of things.

We dont want it boring but shouldnt the antiwar/prowar kill em all type postings at least be shafted to some where where more appreciative readers could enjoy them.

The AH thread should be about us as authors (used loosely in my case) and relative threads not used for political rantings whatever their leanings!

God this Southern Comforts good!!!!!HK
