Mny of us are bettter editors than the pros

Julian Pavia responsible for all of Cline's books as well as the appalling "Artemis" by Any Weir.In both cases he was handed first time or second time published writers and did no intervention on their prose. Despite being paid big bucks to edit, he doesn't see it as his place to, you know ... actually chide his writers into improving their prose. I wish I could make big money doing the exact opposite of what I was hired to do.

That makes me shudder! I edited a few books for Pen & Sword (a UK-based publisher of military books - my husband reviewed a few and they asked him if he'd like to edit one that he knew the author of and he roped me in and before I knew it I had half dozen that I edited - it was fun but financially not worth it at all - my husband got free books, I got a few token payments but it was really interesting and I put a huge amount of time into it....and I am now on first name turns with a few military history writers! So if I ever need to know the minutae of the Syrian-Israeli air wars or Maori fortifications or similar weirdly esoteric subjects, I have go to sources LOL.

I can't imagine being paid big bucks for it and NOT cleaning things up!

on the other hand, when I self-edit I ALWAYS miss things
