I know this has been asked before, but until it happened to me, I didn't really pay much attention to this issue:

A newly submitted story of mine, a Sherlock Holmes spoof, was categorized under "Celebrities" (!)

It definitely should be humor and satire.

I'm not sure if famous fictional characters even can be correctly described as celebrities. Is someone playing a joke? I know that there are people who think that Holmes was real. Surely not a lit.com editor though.
Actually the dictionary doesn't say that a celebrity has to be non-fictional, so maybe they're right. It's just that I really don't think someone looking for a Celebrity erotica story would want to read it.

Do I just resubmit, changing the category back to Humor and Satire?

You might want to read it, but only if you love (or hate) Conan Doyle: The Case of the Steaming Turk

Why don't you just write Laurel with your reasoning?

They haven't miscategorized any of my stories, so I don't
know from personal experience, but I understand that she
will change a category if you ask with a reasonable
argument.

From some of the posts I've seen here asking the same kind of thing, I came to the conclusion that Laurel doesn't actually exist. I think I'm an atheist.

(Laurel, if you're there, give me a sign..)

I just looked in the Celebrities section (I have never actually scanned through it before, and there are lots of stories about fictional characters, so I guess the editor was right.

I'm off to read the one about Pebbles and Bam Bam.

Sorry for time-wasting, Thread closed, as far as I'm concerned.

You mean you put down one category, and they changed it to another? Interesting. I didn't know they would do that.

They did that to me also. I had a story which culminated in four people having an orgy and submitted it as "group sex" but it was posted in "loving wives".
So what? The site belongs to "Laurel" and they can categorise as they see fit. The author can always withdraw the story if it is really that important.

Yours is easy to answer, SJ.

You wrote a parody. All parodies go into celebrities where they sit under that huge, pretty disclaimer that they probably paid some lawyer big bucks to write. Self-protection.

Sherlocke Holmes is probably in the public domain now, but better safe than sorry, no doubt.

Exactly. For legal reasons, generally anything involving a famous character or celebrity is moved into the Celebrity category where it can be accompanied by our disclaimer.

We generally only move a story into another category if 1) it was misplaced (i.e. an incest story in Group) or 2) we feel the story would get better reception in a different category. For example, if a story involving married couples getting together is submitted into Group, we will often move it into Loving Wives because that's generally where people look for "swinger"-themed stories.

That said, if you ever disagree with our moving into another category, submit a story titled "STORYTITLE - Category Question", then let us know your opinion in the story text field. We're definitely open to suggestion. It's your story, and we want to help you get the widest & most appreciative readership possible.

Well, I can see the reasoning behind this, but I just thought it was the writer's responsibilty to decide on the category, be it right or wrong. No biggie, really.
