I was just curious about what the signs are. I've looked around the internet and haven't found two places that say around the same things. I also looked on here and have not seen anything with the symptoms. If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I think that would be best answered by a doctor or OB nurse. :rose:

Welcome to Lit.

I thought about that, but was really just wondering if there is anything in particular to look for, i.e. cramping, bleeding, etc. My period just seems to be a bit outrageous this month and thought maybe it might not be just my period.

Another thing. I haven't told my SO what I'm thinking on this, would it be a good idea to tell him?

A dear friend of mine just went through a miscarriage. She was in her 9th week of pregnancy. Her doctor told her the normal signs were cramping and bleeding, but she didn't experience any of the cramping until a few days after the miscarriage.

There are numerous factors that can bring on particularly bad periods - stress, a change in diet or habits, new medications, etc. If you're really concerned that it's a miscarriage, call your doctor. Your body's hormones revert back to normal after a miscarraige, so even they may not be able to tell you if that was the case.

I'm always an advocate for honesty, so I don't think you should keep this from your SO. I know my husband would want to know if something similar ever happened to me - birth control is the responsibility of both of us, and if there was a problem, we should both be aware of it. If you do decide to talk to him, just be careful how you approach it. A lot of guys might think they were being blamed for it.

Back in days of my conception (the late 60's) women did not get a pregnancy comfirmed before they had missed a second period.

These days when I conceived my own babies I knew within days of missing a period that something was different. The effectiveness of pregnancy tests and the availability of them has made simple issues like late periods, heavy periods or clotting (all of which just happen for a reason some times) seem far more sinister.

I would not assume that what you are describing is miscarriage unless you have had a confirmed pregnancy test.

As has already been stated if you are concerned then see a doctor. If you want to be pregnant then you probably should, you may need a clean out, if you are not trying to get pregnant then just keep an eye on it for the next cycle or two. If it keeps up definately see the doctor.

this is the type of thing I was looking to know more about. My period should have ended three days ago and yet I'm still spotting some and cramping too. And it's not normal period cramps for that matter, they're like massive in my back and legs and everything. The bleeding is varying even from bright red to a dark brown. And my period last week, well, it was a bit heavier than usual. The thing I guess I'm wondering is, how long should I keep an eye on things before going to see the doctor since I do not want to be pregnant?

And yes, I do realize that it is a personal decision on when to visit the doctor, I am just looking for some advice from others that may have been in a situation similar to mine at some point in time.

You have to realize the range of people who ask questions, so general reminders and disclaimers what you're going to get. A few months ago there was a guy asking how he and his girlfriend could "end the pregnancy with herbal remedies or something." Yeah.

It sounds like you feel like something is really wrong. I'm a big believer in trusting your intuition and not putting yourself through all of that anxiety, so I think you should go to your doctor and get this checked out. What you describe could be a laundry list of other things besides a miscarriage, so it's well worth the time and money of an appointment, even if it's just to put your mind at ease and discuss your birth control (if you're on hormonal, that could be screwing things up). Best of luck to you! :rose:

I agree whole heartedly.

Now that you have told us more my advice is just do it, and do it soon.

My first miscarriage happened around 10 weeks. I remember being at home, skipping class, and I got up from watching tv, and had stabbing pain in my abdomen. Hurt like fuck, but went away pretty quickly. Two days later, I started to bleed VERY heavily. I bled like that for about 10 days (with a doc fully aware of everything).

My second miscarriage happened around 5 months into the pregnancy. I was in a school computer lab, and I felt a bit of cramping, but figured maybe that was normal.. my pregnancy to that point had been uneventful.. not even any morning sickness... so I shrugged it off... I started to bleed right there, on the computer lab chair... ran to a bathroom, and waited for paramedics. The computer lab people had thought it was just an early period until I told them I was 5 months preggers.. I don't really remember much regarding physical pain for that one.. I just remember the depression that came after it.

I remember the depression too. I lost my first baby after 9 weeks. I had taken fertility drugs and everything to have it. I now have 3 healthy girls but I am convinced that my miscarriage was my boy child. The depression side of it was really hard.

It is a possibility that there may be other problems with your period being so painful and lasting longer. Being in the medical profession, in my opinion you should definately talk to your doctor. There are several things that could cause this. Not just a miscarriage.
