HEY, WAIT! I keep hearing that it will be minority soldiers who disproportionately die in a "white man's war for oil," but here's more evidence that, well, it's not that way:

................WASHINGTON — The American troops likeliest to fight and die in a war against Iraq are disproportionately white, not black, military statistics show — contradicting a belief widely held since the early days of the Vietnam War.

In a little-publicized trend, black recruits have gravitated toward non-combat jobs that provide marketable skills for post-military careers, while white soldiers are over-represented in front-line combat forces.

The tilt toward white combat troops is recognized by many senior commanders and a small group of scholars who study the military.

"If anybody should be complaining about battlefield deaths, it is poor, rural whites," says Charles Moskos, a military sociologist at Northwestern University in Illinois.............

I wonder if the Pentagon will institute an affirmative action program to remedy this disparity.

The tilt toward white combat troops is recognized by many senior commanders and a small group of scholars who study the military.

"If anybody should be complaining about battlefield deaths, it is poor, rural whites," says Charles Moskos, a military sociologist at Northwestern University in Illinois.

When Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., called recently for the return of a military draft, he evoked images of inequality raised during the early years of the Vietnam War, when black soldiers died at rates much greater than their share of the U.S. population.

Though Rangel is right that blacks and lower-income Americans still serve in disproportionate numbers, that fact misses another significant trend. While blacks are 20% of the military — compared with 12% of the U.S. population — they make up a far smaller percentage of troops in combat jobs on the front line.

In a host of high-risk slots — from Army commandos to Navy and Air Force fighter pilots — blacks constitute less than 5% of the force, statistics show.

Blacks, especially in the enlisted ranks, tend to be disproportionately drawn to non-combat fields such as unit administration and communications. They are underrepresented in jobs shooting rifles or dropping bombs.

Examples:

Of the Army's 45,586 enlisted combat infantryman, 10.6% are black.
Of the Air Force's 12,000 pilots, 245, or about 2%, are black.
In the Navy, 2.5% of the pilots are black.
Senior Air Force officials say they are troubled by the number of black pilots and plan to do better.

The Army's enlisted Green Berets are among the least diverse groups in the military. Only 196 of the Army's 4,278 enlisted Green Berets — fewer than 5% — are black.
The reasons for the racial divide are unclear, but several theories have emerged, including lingering racism in some quarters of the military and a tendency among black recruits to choose jobs that help them find work in the civilian sector.

We are so often told by the

Only a Pawn in their Game, by Bob Dylan

The South politician says to the poor white man: "You've got more than the black, don't complain! You're better than him-- you were born with white skin," he explains. . .

And the poor white remains on the caboose of the train . . .

So he never thinks straight 'bout the shape that he's in . . .

But he ain't to blame:

HE'S ONLY A PAWN IN THEIR GAME!

This just proves my point that what some people call 'racial issues' is really about economics. The problems that minorities have in this country are for the largest part shared by poor rural whites. War protesters should realize that if it is a war for a single group, it is for the rich, not white people in general.
And blasting the military over race is sort of foolish, since my experience with the military is that it is possibly the most color-blind segment of society.

WTF does this mean?

How come a gung-ho American puts a symbol of terrorism over the flag and uses it as his AV?

100 bucks says he's too bok bok to answer.

THIS IS BULLSHIT

J/k I didn't read it.

Oh brother, where art thou?

This type of debate really demeans the quality of soldiers we have who volunteer to protect us. They are without a doubt the finest soldiers we have fielded in our history. They routinely use sophisticated equipment that no one else in the civilian world has yet to see. An average soldier in the US military with the technology and firepower available, is equal to a platoon in WW2. Having talked with a great many of them, I am so impressed with their professionalism, and dedication to America's ideals. I sleep well at night knowing they are out there.

*Notice I didn't call out any race as being a determination of their quality? Drop it.

I was really hesitant to post to a bb thread but....

Keep in mind that the key word is "volunteer"...

Part of the oath they take is "to follow the orders of those appointed over me"

Additionally "I take this oath without mental reservation or purpose of evasion"

There is a reason that the military is not a democracy...

SGT GOODFELLOW: "Men, we need to take that hill, NOW"

PRIVATE NUMBNUTS: "Okay Sarge, but before we do that, can we get the latest poll numbers concerning whether we should or not?"

With that being said, all military members are fully aware that they may be called upon to go to war, that's the price they pay to get all the benefits of a high tech training, and the GI bill....

So, to make the argument that the lower class citizens are going to die to make rich people richer is ludicrous...they knew what might happen...and they still volunteered for it... I might also add that I seriously doubt they need anyone to crusade on their behalf..

What is the role of the military?

To kill people, and blow shit up.,....

Amen T!

The left used this same arguement during Vietnam, so if they reinstated the draft, it would give them more ammo to criticize us. It's all a twisted game, like calling Dubya an idiot, when anyone with brains knows he flew fucking fighter jets in the Texas ANG, so anyone that can fly a fighter jet is an idiot? Clinton drove a car around with astroturf in the back, now that's intelligence!

But Clinton felt our pain....

That's like butt-fucking your girlfriend without her consent, then suddenly getting a serious case of empathy....

Clinton also didn't inhale....
