i have mentioned in some threads and maybe in my profile that i make a part of my living working with wood. a lot of what i do is kinda like sculpting i guess. making oil lamps, boxes, candle holders, etc. out of found wood. here's a project that i became absolutely obsessed with. i have close to 80 hours in it. the idea came from a web page i found dealing with a world famous art decco artist.

it contains 8 different kinds of wood and wood veneers, silver and copper. when you remove the pyramid there is a large crystal inside.

be kind.

That's really cool. I like the way the grain and coloring of the wood was worked with.

Oh wow. That's great. I could catch the back side of the astral plane with that thing.

Whoa. That's something I admire. To make things with my hands like that. I look at that and see, "It don't come easy."

Work produces quality. The rest is effort, I would assume.

That's a beautiful piece of work there Uncle J.

I bet completing something like that really makes you feel good.

thank you km. that was a big part of the fun.
thank you glam
thank you sillyman, is the security check a hassle on those astral planes?

riff, there's some work and effort involved, of course, but when i get into a project like this i sit down at my workbench and quite often look up and am surprised that 3 or 4 hours have passed. it's not an out of body experience or anything like that. i guess the best way to describe it is like when you're reading a great book and you are so absorbed in it that you loose track of time and place.

That is exceptional. How nice of you to share that with us. Being very unique is not only one of it's finest attributes though. The appearance of craftsmanship that I can tell from the photo is of masterful caliber. The raying pattern works well with the overall design and the concept of the peice itself, although lacking conventional functionality, has a sort of divine way of making itself seem very much a utile object. I fucking dig it.

That piece is absolutely beautiful. Show us more, it's not "showing off" just sharing a work of beauty.

thank you all. i really wasn't in desperate need of strokin' but i sure won't turn it down. and it was the first piece that i had used the veneer technique on and am proud of it.

and starfish, what a wonderful thing to say. the piece was designed to be a meditation device. i have a dear lady friend that owns a little shop here that sells all sorts of wonderful things. crystals and fairies and native american flutes and drums and art and beautiful jewelry. she gives crystal readings and such. you know the kind of place. so anyway, she sells a lot of my pieces there and i made this one to appeal to a certain kind of buyer. (one with a pretty good chunk of change to start with)

so thanks again, everyone.

Awsome

You are very talented Unclej.
I saw a table once, that a guy that was in the army here bought in Germany. The top had a beautiful design made out of a bunch of different wood inlayed in the top.
Your work reminded me of that.
Any other pictures of your work would be welcomed.
