what is the best medicine for 'em.

my symptoms... eyes are ready to jump out of the sockets, bright light bad..very bad.. the slightest noise is a thousand kettle drums in the background.

a little advice

OK

1. get away from the computer and lay down.

2. close your eyes (darkest room possible)

3. Pressure points. I'll try to explain where to push.
a. above your eyes.. in your eyebrows there is a pressure point that is about an inch from the bridge of your nose. You can feel the indentations. Press on those for a count of five. (count slow)

b. Below your eyes..(on your cheek bone.. not your eye socket) almost directly below the upper pressure points are more little indents. Press on those for a count of five.

c. On your chin (under the chin kinda).. about an inch to each side of it.. again some indentations. Press for a count of five.

4. Grab your ear about half way up.. pull out away from your head and back. Hold for a count of five (ok, this one sounds really weird.. but it works)

5. Try taking some aspirin, Ibuprofen or Tylenol.

6. Drink alot of water.

7. Get some sleep.

Hope you get to feeling better soon

if you have had these before and know they are definately migraines, go to you doctor's and ask for some samples of Imitrex.

they come in 50 mg and 100 mg tablets or an inhaler. Take one (usually start with the 50 mg) if not better in 90 min. take another. Migraine should feel better in 20-30 min. time after taking last pill.

*most important* if you have high blood pressure talk to you doctor first about side effect of Imitrex...it does mess with your BP.

~fellow migraine sufferer, 2-3 per month. 100 mg Imitrex tabs. thank god for them! I wouldn't be able to function without them.
I can be sensitive to light and/or sound, jaw and teeth hurt at times and my HAIR even hurt once!

good luck!

yahoo! 1000 posts!! didn't want to say it too loud because of your migraine.

I occasionally get a classic migraine--predromal visual aura, nausea, shaking, and--of course, headache. Fortunately, the migraines that I get are very short. They are usually over in about five or six hours, and I've only had about ten migraines in as many years.

I understand that migraines are caused by extreme vaso-dilation in the brain. The increased blood pressure causes parts of the brain to swell.

With this in mind, any powerful vaso-constricter--if taken in time--can potentially reduce the symptoms. For myself, a cigarette and/or a few cups of coffee during the aura will often stop many if not most of the later and more painful symptoms. 'Course, it might be the placebo effect.

When I experience an especially powerful aura, that's my cue to get some caffeine or nicotine. If I don't have coffee made, I'll just eat a spoonful of ground coffee. Feels like battery acid in my stomach, but it just about stops the migraine in it's tracks.

If the theory about vasodilation is true, you should avoid alcoholic drinks--they are vasodilators and could exacerbate your migraine.

I'm not a doctor.

A classic migraine is caused by blood vessels swelling and causing pain from the blocking of the veins.

Ibuprofen, asprin or similar that thins the blood is good relief. But always consult your doctor first. :)

Personaly I have tried everything the last 15 years for them. Sleeping them off with taking two Ibuprofen cuts them down to about a day in bed for me.

One of the reasons I am self employed, I can get two a month sometimes, so being the boss I can just go into a dark room and sleep.

Those symptoms also describe "Sinus Headache" which is actually more likely than a migraine if you don't have a history of migraines.

Those symptoms an also be attributed to "Tension Headache" -- again more likely than migraine without a history of chronic headaches.

I spent ten years being treated for "migraines" before I discovered on my own that I suffer from sinus headaches combined with tension headaches.

Once the headache is established, some common remedies will work whatever the cause -- darkness, quiet, and moist heat applied over the eyes.

A cold pack at the back of the neck might help.

A decongestant or anti-histamine might help.

Accupressure applied to the webbing between the thumb and forefinger might help.

A pain medication like advil or excedrin probably WILL help to some extent, but won't completely remove the pain until you address the source of the pain -- sinus pressure, muscle tension, caffiene withdrawal, dehydration, or the vaso-dilation of a true migraine.

I am not a doctor, but I have suffered from chronic headaches for a good many years. If the headache persists, SEE A DOCTOR! Severe headaches can be an indication of a much more serious condition and should be evaluated by a doctor.

Imatrex

note that Imatrex comes in 3 forms: pill, nasal spray and injection. Each may or may not work. If the pill and the spray dont work dont cast away the thought of the injection...it is indeed the best of the three.

And its a automatic gun thing so you you just have to press the button and it does the rest.

You kow the symtoms...its always best to get it as early as possible. With the shot though it usually doesnt matter.

good luck my friend...

Oh not good...

I get them about once or twice a month, sometimes they last a day, sometimes even longer. As noted on one of the other posts sometimes it can also be a sinus headache.

What I do when I start feeling headachy is immediately go take the imitrex *thank god for these little wonder pills*

Turn the shower on to full spray of hot water... just so it steams the bathroom up and then adjust the water temp so I can tolerate it. I have a massaging shower head, so I adjust this to a pulse spray and then let it beat down on my neck, shoulders and forehead... if this brings some form of relief then I also know it's sinus related too. Imitrex won't really do much for this but it will prevent it from getting worse.

Once I get out of the shower I wrap a bandana around my forehead and the relief from that simple pressure is soooo wonderful. Off to bed... nothing else but bed and sleep. Anything else will just aggrevate it further.

If you get to the point of getting sick to your tummy... *I've gotten to tears when this happens* It's best to just get it over with and let it happen. Once that's done and over with you almost always feel like a new person.

Good luck.. I really hope you feel better soon.

Hugs

Hun I would, but I'm so afraid of needles. :(

I take the pills and they've worked fine for me. It's just when it's a migraine that might be from a sinus/allergy problem that imitrex won't touch it much. You have to treat the originating problem first.

needles are bad in my book too, but like I said its a little unit you hold next to your shoulder and press the button. The spring pops the bitty end in and injects. It is much more effectve and hopefully could do away with the showers and other methods...

but like you said, you need to know which headache it is first...

Ugh....I know migraines.

Some good tips here....I'll add some of my own.

Ginger capsules help me. Take with lots of water.

Ginseng is also helpful.

Darkness is essential....especially if you have light sensitivity.

At the beginning sometimes you can divert it by running your hands under very hot water. Causes vasodilation.

Caffeine helps some but you have to be careful. Excess caffeine or caffeine withdrawal can also trigger them. I've had to give up all caffeine.

Another pressure point is the tip of your big toe. Find the sensitive spot there and press as hard and as long as you can take it with your finger nail.

Sometimes there's nothing to do but sleep it off. A cold rice bag over your eyes can feel really good.

Is your body telling you something....are you sleeping ok? anything stressing you out you need to deal with? are there food triggers (chocolate, some cheese, nuts)?
